1 out of 5 stars Beware - Don't Buy a Magellen GPS - 1412 or any other   November 26, 2009
D. Dundes (Walnut Creek, CA United States)
This unit is slow to pick up satellite links, has no traffic alert, broke 1 month after warranty expired and Customer Service was a joke. I would definitely not purchase another Magellan product.

They did offer to send me a refurbished unit for $120. This is after talking to their customer service department three times on a unit that had only received limited and gentle use.

There are too many other good products out there that deserve a try before I would consider a Magellan product.

1 out of 5 stars Not a reliable GPS receiver   November 21, 2009
Richard M. Caiander (Shelburne Falls, MA)
This item arrived from Amazon as expected in Sept. 2009. Initially there were a few bugs. When turning on the unit, it would take a VERY long time to acquire a signal and then update our location on the digital map on the screen. Other bugs included driving through town over the Deerfield River bridge and the display indicated that we were not on the bridge but on the water. Didn't a major religious figure 'walk on water?' Hey, not a bad trick! Is this the GPS unit or the satellite signals? In early November, the unit ceased working altogether with a blank screen. I tried to call Magellan but could not get through. Amazon agreed to take the unit back, however, subtracted $ 20 from the refund to my credit card. Later when I called, Amazon agreed to add a $ 20 credit to my Amazon acct. but not my credit card. So, we're looking for a better GPS unit. I would not recommend this unit.

4 out of 5 stars Magellan Roadmate 1412   November 18, 2009
C. Sowa (Sarasota, FL)
Product works great on everything. The only problem is I purchased item in Oct. 2009 but the map installed is the 2007 version it seems that if old stock is sitting around an updated map version should be included with the puchase either by sending away online from the manufacturer or the retailer.

3 out of 5 stars Outdated maps and lack of charging flexibility   November 17, 2009
SJ2010 (NJ)
The Magellan 1412 works well and is easy to use. Very easy to input your destination. Clear audio instructions, including street names. But this model's maps are a bit outdated. Charging is limited to plugging into the car's outlet, and not in the house either though your PC or wall outlet. Considering that the unit requires a 3 hour charge, that's hard to accomplish unless you take very long car trips. Therefore, the unit is not charged the majority of the time, so it cannot be used without plugging it in the car. I find that inconvenient, as I like to program some of my my trips at home before I get into the car. Now I know why Amazon priced the unit so low. Next time I'll go for a few more bucks and get a newer model with better features.

2 out of 5 stars I wish I bought a Garmin   November 10, 2009
"L" Herzog (Snellville, GA)
I have owned the Garmin Nuvi 265 for about 3 years now. Recently it was stolen and I went shopping around. I had been happy with the Garmin, but about six months ago, my uncle borrowed a Magellan (different model from this one) and I helped him program and use it. I was curious to see what the Magellan had to offer that was different from my Garmin. The one thing I absolutely loved about the Magellan was the Trip Planning feature. You could plan multiple stops on your trip, save trips, etc. So, I thought that this next time I would try the Magellan RoadMate 1412.

First, it is not as intuitive to operate as the Nuvi. Second, the commands given were not clear and before you knew it, you passed the turn you were supposed to make. I was frustrated with it after 2 very small trips trying to find the local aquarium and then trying to get back home. I gave it to my friend, who was visiting, so it could help her get back home. I should have printed out a MapQuest map for her (that's what got her down here to begin with - without a hitch!).

She said that she went out of her way by 2 hours (making the 16-hour trip an 18-hour trip). One hour she said was due to the command coming after they had already missed the exit and then having to find a way to turn around. The other hour was due to highway construction (they were passing through Pennsylvania - where construction (even at 1 a.m.) is perpetually going on). I didn't want to tell her that this stupid machine also has traffic alerts and should have somehow diverted her.

Overall, I've learned my lesson and will go back to Garmin.
