Once bitten, twice shy November 21, 2009 Thomas H. Herson (Glen Burnie, MD USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As a ASE master tech for 19 years, I've installed a number of "cheap" remote starters that worked well but had intermittent glitches through their 2-5 yr lifespans. For my wife however I wanted to install a "good one" so she wouldnt have to worry about those little gremlins. I thought I did good research and came up with the viper 5901. It seemed to have decent reviews(have to wonder about sources), had been around for awhile and the remote seemed cool. Without hyperbole, I couldnt have made a worse choice.
My wife was simply interested in a reliable remote starter with a door lock/unlock feature so she wouldnt have to carry her factory remote as well. I've now had her van apart for a week and still no worky.
First off, I had to stop mid-install five days ago because it seems many late model vehicles(2000-up)have their door locks on a Multiplex system(MUX) and therefore you MUST buy a separate module($30+shipping)for them to work. It would have been nice for the seller or manufacturer to make that fact known before the install! By the way, the manufacturer website([...]) given to help with the install -critical info like wiring and such- is not available to anyone but their dealers so youre on your own unless you can get help from your retailer over the phone. Being in the business, thankfully I had access to technical info right on my laptop.
I received the 456L door lock module yesterday with no instructions. I did some searching on the net and managed to locate them for a similar model and it worked. The module needs programmed along with both remotes and the main unit as well through a series of timed grounds and push buttons(took over an hour -drove me CRAZY). After all the programming(using the updated flyer because the original printed instructions were wrong) I found the remote start feature didnt work. I wasted hours back checking and reprogramming to no avail. The self diagnostic system didnt even function. Turns out through a recent feedback that another installer just had the same problem with two of these exact units. I called the retailer and to their credit, they've been trying to rectify the problem with their customers but also referred me to Viper(integrated electronics). The representative at Viper answering the phone was disinterested and unhelpful aside from letting me know that they're aware of major software issues with the units, they've had numerous updates in the last few months and they've supposedly corrected them in their newer models. I could go on but let me give up(my wife has- on having her van back for Thanksgiving).
BOTTOM LINE:
Installing a remote starter or alarm or both is a decision that shouldnt be taken lightly. You're hacking up your vehicle wiring and installing a foreign controller with a mind of its own. If you decide to go forward, choose that controller and installer wisely (you can remove the interloper but you'll never restore the original integrity to the wiring harness). This 5901 system happened to be overengineered, trying to take on too many functions through gobs of wiring(6 harnesses and over 50 wires) and in the end(or beginning as it were)couldnt even do the very basics. I will keep looking for a simple and more importantly, reliable remote starter/door unlocker, even if overpriced, steering clear of Viper products. I hope this diatribe saves some of you the misery I'm continuing to endure.
Unsure November 12, 2009 Frank So far I am having numerous false alarms that say the hood is open. And last night while I was hand washing the car, the alarm went off again indicating the hood was open. The remote starter conflicts with the push-to-start. It grinded once. I thought it had anti-grinding technology. I wasn't going to use it after that. But I did. Then once the car would not start when I pushed my ignition button. Kept starting then stopping. It finally started when I disarmed and rearmed via the remote. I was on a date and it embarrassed me. As did the grinding noise in front the neighbors. Also no one warned me that the higher price you pay for the alarm, the higher the install charge. FYI, the blue light being on the antennae, which has to be on the front windshield ... I don't know, but to me under the shaded glass part it's hard to see even at night. Right now, I'm worried about the many false alarms.
Awesome Alarm!! November 1, 2009 James (South Florida) I purchase this alarm from Amazon and had a local stereo shop install it to save a few bucks. Alarm is awesome has a 1 mile range on it. You have to purchase a bypass box for some vehicles to get the auto start to work, in which i had to for toyota tacoma. The key pad has a display that indicates if the vehicle is locked or not, temp of inside of car, and if the alarm is set off and which zone it is. I personally like the auto start i have my vehicle started in the morning and warmed up before i leave for work. I would definitely recommend this alarm to anyone!!

Very Nice Alarm/Remote Start System October 8, 2009 DSkrobarcek (ArgyleTX) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased the Viper 5901 and had it installed a little over a month ago on my Ford Excursion 7.3 Diesel. I had it installed at the local Best Buy and they did a great install. The system has one way two way remote which has great range (over a mile without obstructions) I can remote start from the window of my office building and by the time I get downstairs the AC is blowing cold and the truck is ready to go.
The two way remote also makes noise and vibrates when the alarm is activated. I activated it once just to test this feature, you WILL know if someone breaks into your vehicle and you are in range. The blue blinking light affixed to the inside antennae is also great for detrring would be theifs. I highly recommend this.
