Amazon.com Product Description Amazon.com Product Description This is a refurbished GPS. Refurbished generally means that the unit has been returned to the manufacturer, who brings the navigator back to like new conditions. Some GPS may contain cosmetic blemishes.
Garmin's nüvi 255W improvesupon its 200-series predecessors by adding top-of-the-line features such as FM traffic updates or MSN Direct content to an entry-level line. But Garmin is also introducing some significant improvements with this new series, like a predictive technology that provides faster satellite lock, a redesigned screen with more information, terrain maps, and an exciting new photo navigation feature. The 255W adds complete maps for North America and Text-to-Speech, so you get turn by turn spoken directions with the real names of streets (e.g. "turn left in 50 feet at Nebraska Way", rather than merely "turn left in 50 feet"). The 255W also offers a wide 4.3-inch (diagonal) screen that displays 70% more of the road around you. The nüvi 2x5 models all sport the slim design that Garmin introduced with the 200-series last year, so they all fit comfortably in your pocket or purse, and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that makes them convenient for navigation by car or foot. All of the models include useful travel tools like a JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more.
Important Product Information: This device features a "screen lock" feature. This is a standard feature on all nüvi 2x5 and 7x5 Garmin units. If you slide the "Power" key to the right, it will lock the screen and prevent any accidental touches. Once the screen lock feature is engaged, the screen will go black/gray after about 15 seconds to save power on the device. To unlock the screen, just slide the "Power" key to the center position. This feature is really targeted for "Pedestrian" mode so that a user can put the device in his or her pocket/purse and quickly unlock the screen instead of powering on/off continuously. For more information, see page 5 of the product manual.

Which nüvi is Best for You?: Click here to see a quick, simple comparison of features for all Garmin nuvi GPS navigators Learn More One of Garmin's key product philosophies is to make extremely complex technology easy to use for anyone right out of the box, and perhaps nowhere is that better exemplified than in the user interface for Garmin's portable navigation devices. Garmin's interface is a key to their success part of what makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nüvi takes you there with turn-by-turn voice directions, 2-D or 3-D maps and smooth map updates as you navigate. This year, Garmin has redesigned its interface to include much more useful information.

| Your GPS device locks onto transmissions from a dedicated network of Satellites in order to determine its position. Until the device gets a "lock" on three satellites, it can't effectively navigate, so decreasing the time it takes for your device to get "satellite lock" is always a goal of GPS manufacturers. With Garmin's new HotFix technology, your Garmin GPS remembers the position of all satellites it is tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements in order to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. This gives the device an idea of where it should look for satellites, and dramatically decreases the time it takes for your Garmin to get its position and start navigating. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to 3 days after the device was last turned off. Using Garmin’s unique Web site â Garmin Connect Photos â users can choose from millions of geo-located photos provided by Google’s Panoramio photo sharing community and download them to the nüvi for a richer navigation experience using pictures as a guide.

| The super-bright, 4.3-inch (diagonal) touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. Great for the technologically challenged November 26, 2009 h.hughes (wisconsin) I live in a rural area so some of my address and other destinations are not on the maps. Other than that, it's been great (easy to use and gets me where I want to go).
Excellent November 26, 2009 R.D. Monsoon Buying refurbished is certainly the way to go. If I didn't know I had bought a refurbished unit, I would have had no way of knowing it was not new.
Some people here have said they had problems registering the unit to get the free update because it was refurbished, but I had no problems.
A note on downloading the updates. If you have little free space on your hard drive, be aware that the update requires 4 to 5 free GB. The download is 2 GB and then another 2 to 3 GB is required for unpacking and installing the file.
I have used this unit for road trips as long as 1,000 miles, and for getting around a new city that I recently moved to. Overall I have found the Garmin to be excellent. The audio directions are clear enough that I rarely have to take my eyes off the road to look at the unit's screen, it's always very accurate at placing my location, and when I miss a turn, it reroutes the directions very quickly. The estimated time of arrival is extremely accurate. It seems to take into account that on major highways you're likely to drive over the speed limit - I found you have to average 10 to 12 mph over the limit for a few miles before it will adjust the ETA.
I have only two complaints about the unit:
I find this to be a major flaw, but it only really happens once every 300 miles: the Garmin will tell me to "turn right at Main Street, then take ramp on left." Notice the problem? It doesn't tell me where the ramp goes. The information on the screen also lacks this information. After I take the turn, then it says "take ramp to I-95 N." By this point I've already driven by the ramp. Like I said this does not happen often. Typically it does say "turn right at Main Street, then take ramp to I-95 N." I think it has something to do with the proximity of the ramp to the intersection - I've noticed that it has happened when the ramp is immediately after the intersection.
My other complaint is relatively minor. Let's say you're driving down I-95 and the road widens by a lane or two and they fork off to merge into another highway that either intersects or is very close to I-95 (so it's not really an exit). If you're supposed to stay on I-95, the Garmin says "in 1 mile keep left on I-95." The first few times I heard this, I thought that it meant I had to be in the left lane because the other lanes would force me onto a different road. As a result, I moved over a few lanes, only to see that I never had to change lanes in the first place. What the Garmin should really say, is simply "in 1 mile stay on I-95." By saying "keep left or right" the Garmin implies that you need to change lanes even though you rarely ever have to. You get used to it pretty quickly, but it's annoying the first few times.
Despite these two qualms, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Garmin. Living in a new state and city, it's been a real lifesaver.
Garmin 255W November 24, 2009 H. Theiste (NC) It was easy to install and has helped on trips. I have found that it does not have reliable information for some areas of NC. I sometimes find it difficult to get directions to places that have been in place for years, but the street name is not in the GPS inventory. Also wish it would give a preview of the trip like I'm used to with Mapquest. The option may be in the device, but I have not been able to find it yet.
great deal November 22, 2009 Anthony Morello (nc) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
had street i5 was ok but small screen this large screen is easy to see bright daylight or night.voice could be a bit clearer but still understandable
Really could be better November 15, 2009 holson Even a new unit would give the owner some issues, it ships without a charge on the battery, so without a usb cable you are stuck with having to charge the unit in the car first, and as it won't find a signal and you certainly can't register the unit or download maps until charged, really a dumb situation, when the usb cable is only 75 cents. As I had a spare camera usb cable I was able to charge it first, others without this cable will have an issue.
Once charged however, the Garmin registration and map download went as they described, though involved, and 5 hours later all was current.
The refurbished unit had 1 dead pixel, but not observable from a normal distance.
The 1 year warranty and free map and OS upgrade was a plus.
