5 out of 5 stars Magellan Road Mate Review   November 21, 2009
Conrad Santini (Lawrence, KS USA)
An excellent product with a screen large enough to view comfortably without having to divert your eyes from the road for any significant length of time. Still, I don't think it "knows" enough that you can rely on it alone to navigate, especially in the open countryside of the Midwest where I now live. It's still wise to do a MapQuest or Google search first before setting out. CS

4 out of 5 stars Almost a very good unit   November 19, 2009
D. Kolar (Midwest)
I am used to a Garmin or in-dash unit, but bought the Magellan for its large screen size and highway sign features. On a recent trip to Disney, put the magellan in a suitcase for use with a rental car. I was a bit disapointed with the time it took to acquire satellites in the new city, but once it fired up it worked OK. I hope that using it more will confirm that I made the right choice.

3 out of 5 stars Swithcing from Garmin to Magellan   November 18, 2009
Dan Evander Sr. (Sun City AZ)
When my Garmin stopped working I reviewed Consumer Reports for what was the best and the Magellan 1400 was selected. What I found was there are so many differences in how each brand works that the learning curve to effectively use the Magellan is long.
I have finally mastered the routing via the address book as long as I stored the actual address. When driving, the display shows what street you are on rather than the street name you are approaching (a feature found in the Garmin). You can select to view either the direction, speed, elevation or time but only one at a time. The 2D vs. 3D is quirky and at times the device seems to be 100 meters or so behind where you really are.
The selected routing is fine and the speech is clear but unlike the Garmin you cannot change the voice.

2 out of 5 stars Deal killer: Missing a speed limit indicator   November 18, 2009
Marc Brenner (Lafayette, CA United States)
After owning Garmins, I find that having a speed limit indicator is a very worthwhile feature when traveling out of town. It allows you to know the limit, wherever you are, without having to keep an eye peeled for signs on already unfamiliar roads.

There certainly are many good reviews on this unit, and it does have some nice features - just missing the one I consider invaluable.

It also can be slow to non-functional in rerouting after going off the route.

Top volume is not that good. Only one English language voice, no choices. Slow start-up.

Very nice slim body and great screen size.

1 out of 5 stars What Happens When Your Unit Is Out Of Warranty   November 10, 2009

All of the reviews on the Roadmate series GPS devices deal with their capabilities, mine has to do with their service. My 760 was out of the warranty period as a result of me storing the unit in a drawer in my bedroom! For almost one year I had GPS through my cell phone, so the 760 was not used. When I changed Cell carriers, I decided to pull out the old 760 and use it again. The down time in the drawer was enough to "kill it". As soon as I plugged it in, I got a blue screen saying "too cold." That message never went away. I called Magellan customer service and they said, sorry, we understand that you stored the unit in your drawer, but it's now out of warranty, we don't have any upgrades for your unit, you can buy another through our "customer loyalty" program, which I quickly found out was more expensive than buying the same unit right here on Amazon! What hurt me so badly, was the fact that I had paid several hundred dollars for mine, before the prices dropped so much on GPS units, and Magellan knew how much I paid, and they would not help me in any way, other than say, buy another through their "customer loyalty" program, which was no help at all, as the same unit can be purchased for less most anywhere on the Internet.

Just be informed, if you buy Magellan, and go over that warranty period, no matter what the circumstances, there are absolutely NO exceptions, you are dead in the water, as their customer loyalty program is of no value to the customer at all. They quote list prices that no one sells GPS devices for, for the sake of appearing to be helpful. I paid enough for my Magellan 760 to purchase several of their newer models, but they would not take that into consideration, so I loose. I hope you don't loose as well. A company is only as good as their customer service, and I can assure you, there was no customer service for me! Is there anyone out there that would like a nice 760 Roadmate with no scratches, perfect condition, other than it only gives a blue screen that says "too cold"?
