What a handy little oven... November 27, 2009 Richard G. Goodwin (New Hampshire, USA) Since receiving this little gem we've used it whenever we can over our conventional oven unless whatever we're doing just won't fit. It's easy to use and works quite well and uses less energy because it cooks in less time. There are already many other reviews so I'll not repeat what has already been said, but do feel compelled to dispell some myths that have been applied to this oven. Nowhere in the manual is it said that you cannot use foil in the oven. What it says is to be careful how you use it making sure it is applied tightly and kept away from the heating elements as they are not the same as in a convential oven. Also, it does not say you cannot put glass in the oven. You are cautioned to ensure you are using "oven proof" cookware. Another reviewer mentioned a bamboo cutting board which is now available that once mounted on the top of the oven allows items to be placed on top even when it's being used regaining your counter space especially if you have a small kitchen. Oh, and we replaced a micro-wave oven which we seldom used with one we use mostly daily and we don't miss it a bit...
Breville BOV800xl (toaster oven thing) November 27, 2009 D. Buckman First,, I hate to cook, but it beats the three alternatives, eating out, getting married or starving to death (in no particular order).
I think this is my third toaster oven. The first was a Proctor Silex I got while in the service so it's over 30 years old, still works, thou I wouldn't use it for food as both it and my regular range have heavy oil smell from using them too many times to temper tool steel after an oil quench.
Second one was a Black and Decker, worked fine for 6 years and thermostat now sticks on, so it has just two states off or on.
Many comments on how wonderful life was because this heated food evenly, Huh?
I never noticed this to be a problem with anything other than the early microwaves that didn't have turn tables, I guess I'm just an insensitive cad.
Another compared it to Apple products,, right on if he meant they charge a huge premium for a slightly better design and quality that should have only cost them pennies. There is one big difference thou, Computers and phones are obsolete in two years or less and I'm expecting this to last decades. A few dollars a year vs a few hundred. I expected as much before I bought it, I know the price is higher than it should be but I don't regret it because it's many years of having a nice thing.
I'M not rich enough else stupid enough for the Apple.
It is a much nicer build than any toaster oven I've had (two) or any I've seen in the stores (many)
Be careful what you wish for: I use old magazines under the food while eating to keep it from cooling too fast, the magazine having been warmed on top of the oven while the food cooks. The top of this gets nowhere near as hot as the old B&D so I need to figure out some other way to keep things warm. I thought an enclosure that got hot was a bad thing and it turns out I miss it. (it gets very warm but slower and less than the B&D)
Cooking times are at most 1 or 2 minutes faster than on the non convection B&D (13 minutes vs 14 for frozen nuggets eg.) Or much slower if you wait for the preheat(did that the first time only, wanted a switch to turn it off but found warm and reheat don't use it )
It broils steak thou way faster like 11 min vs 16.
The control is what I want, usable without ever having to look at a cheat sheet or manual,or think, and I don't want to have to think when I'm doing something I don't want to think about.
One big improvement would have been to exchange the usless "frozen" button for a default/custom button and saved your custom settings to non volatile memory.
Then the preset would always be available for ref without trashing the custom, and you wouldn't loose custom when the power goes out, which it does almost monthly. Anything more like memories 1 thur 10 and it gets complex and you'd have to think.
An Awesome Tabletop Convection Oven November 20, 2009 Anita A. Faulkner (Yorktown, VA USA) My Hamilton Beach convection oven's convection fan "died" after using three years. Everything else worked great and I liked that I seldom had to use my big oven because it was large - many of the countertop ovens are typical toaster ovens that are too small. But I missed the convection feauture - especially for cooking meat so I donated it when I moved from Texas back to Virginia this summer. It is just my husband and me now most of the time and we work opposite shifts so are often only cooking for ourselves so I did a lot of research on tabletop convection ovens.
The Breveille had such good reviews that I bought it. It is not as large as my Hamilton Beach - but larger than many of the toaster type ovens on the market. I wanted it in black but it only comes in brushed stainless steel - but it looks - and cooks - like a commercial oven. I love it. I have made bran muffins in it every morning for the two weeks I have had it - perfect muffins every time.
My husband did not want me to get another tabletop oven because counter space is prime real estate in our smaller kitchen but I just could not see heating the big oven up to cook muffins for 20 minutes, etc. So, he kind of groaned when he saw it on the counter a few weeks ago. It took me a few times of experimenting - and then actually reading the manual - to get the dials set right but I like that they are turn dials and not electronic because they should last longer. One thing when I first heated t as instructed before using was the current temperature - it looked like it had two readings. Finally - duh- I realized I needed to peel off the protective sticker,,,,,
Well, my husband offered to bring in a turkey breast for their potluck today at his work. At Wal-Mart I picked him up the Honeysuckle White turkey breasts - figuring that since Honeysuckle White has always been the best tasting turkeys we have roasted that camd from the grocery store - I couldn't go wrong. He was a little more astute than I was at first and figured out the controls himself (men don't read instruction manuals anyway). He used the convection feature for roasting the turkey breast. He put it in the fridge last night and put it back in the fridge after his commute. He set it out 30 minutes before the potluck and used my electric knife to carve it. He said he is glad he tasted it before putting it out or he would not have gotten any. He said it was absolutely delicious - the convection really ikept in the juices well - and even though thoroughly done on the meat thermometer - tender and juicy on the inside. He called me from work and told me to go back to Wal-mart and get a few more of them and put in the freezer because the Honeysuckle White are hard to find at other times of the year and he definitly wants more to cook in the Breville.
I know this oven will come in handy over the holidays when my house is full of children and grandchildren. You can use the top of the Breville as a warming tray! Plus there is a warm setting on the dial fo foods inside. The Breville will hold a 13 x 9 pan provided the pan does not have protruding edges.
The Breville is more expensive that I would have liked - but it looks like it was built to last and we are now BOTH thrilled with it. I have used it every day for two weeks. As of this writing, Amazon has the best price on the internet for this oven- including free shipping.
So far, so good after a few months but exterior gets pretty hot November 18, 2009 Cayenne I use my double conventional ovens very often but still needed a smaller oven for small tasks. I was very apprehensive about buying this oven online since there are so many toaster ovens in the city, but this convection oven was the best deal. Plus free shipping is awesome. The transaction went smoothly and the oven was very easy to put together - I took it out of its boxes, washed the racks, and plugged it in! So far there haven't been any problems. Like a few other reviewers have said, the exterior gets pretty hot so be careful of what's near the oven - a phone cord was almost melted on this end. So far we have baked light items in the oven but the true test will come tonight when we bake sweet potatos and homemade pizza!
More Things Should Be Like This November 14, 2009 John A. Penz Jr. (usa) I have been using this product for about a month and am delighted with it. Setup and use are easy. The convection option cooks/bakes wonderfully. The product was sensibly and securely packaged. It is well thought out. I would definitely recommend this product to a friend.
