Knifes are flexible November 25, 2009 J. Ward 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this knife set and have had them for about 2 weeks. The knifes are sharp but the forged steel is more flexible than I would have liked. The handle feels great and is very comfortable to use. The grip of the handle is firm and doesn't slip. The wooden block is cheap and made in China. Overall, it is a nice set and a fair price for the money. The Forschner Victorinox knife sets, which are made of stamped steel, are about the same price and got very good reviews by readers and Cook magazine.
Good knife set but will you really use the set? November 22, 2009 Armeen Mazda (Tiburon, CA United States) This is a good knife set and quality metal blades. But the question is do you really need the set? We do mostly asian cooking and we have found that you can use the santokou to do just about everything. Also, the santoku seems redundant with the chef knife. The scissors are handy but the others smaller knives and the chef's knife we just haven't found real use for. Please note that even though this is supposed to be made in Germany, at least the wood block is made in China.
great quality November 18, 2009 J. Smith Excellent quality, great balance, not too heavy, VERY sharp. Wooden block is also attractive and better-made than some of the ones that come with cheaper knives. I actually enjoy chopping veggies now!
Not what they used to be November 11, 2009 D Piddy 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I ordered this block set already having a couple of pieces of 4-star from some years back. These are not the same. The metal is _much_ thinner and the knives are correspondingly much lighter. For example, my old 6-inch 4-star chef's knife is significantly heavier than the 8-inch included in this set. This change in weight completely changes the feel of the knives - to my mind, not for the better.
Great knives... could be better, though. November 4, 2009 H. Kim (Denver, CO) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this knife set after reading many positive reviews. It has been two months since I received the set from Amazon and I'm impressed with its overall quality. Each knife is still sharp and beautiful. Seven-inch Santoku and 8-inch Chef's knives are my favorites.
My complaints:
1. Two small paring knives are a little too short to handle a variety of small cutting tasks. For example, I tried to cut apples but the knives are too short to cut the fruits in one stroke. I had to use a bigger utility knife from my old Chicago Cutlery knife set.
2. Five-inch utility knife has a serrated edge, which I believe is useful in certain tasks, but not really versatile. As one of the previous reviewers pointed out, you will need a regular utility knife. Six-inch utility knife would be great although it costs $65 if you buy it from an open stock.
3. Each knife comes with an ergonomic handle but it is a little too small for my hand. I wish Henckels knives had bigger handles.
Overall, I'm impressed with the quality and the affordability of this knife set. However, I have a 20-year-old Gerber stamped knife set (12 piece block set) that is as sharp as this Henckels set, but costing merely 1/3 of the price. As such, look elsewhere if you're a budget-conscious chef. Perhaps, Victorinox three-piece stamped knife set that sells for $61 would be an ideal alternative.
I'd recommend this knife set to anyone who is looking for excellent and relatively affordable forged knives from Germany.
