Customer Reviews:
3 out of 5 stars A good - but not superior - recording   January 31, 2009
Booboo (London)
Any pianist who endeavors to play Godowsky, much less record his music, has to have extra guts and uncommon gifts not often found in pianists.

Italian pianist Carlo Grante is a fine pianist; few would dispute this assertion. That said, it was a let-down to listen to his Passacaglia; it is rushed - to the point where notes seem to be lost in the fray of the tempestuous variations. The somber spirit of the piece eludes the recording as well. The balance of the album is, again, good, but I am left feeling frustrated as I follow along with the scores of the works. There is a dispassionateness that seems to hover over the performances. They struck me as wooden and cold, rather than warm and fiery. When juxtaposed to, say, Anti Sirilla's arrestlingly deliberative and enunciated Godwsky recording, the shortcomings of the Grante performances become clearer, and Sirilla's stature looms even larger. As a pianist who will be introducing audiences to the Passacaglia at some point soon, I am appreciative of and sensitive to the various reference frames proffered by these marvelous pianists. They are instructive in both directions, good and bad.

Another point comes to mind here; the Grante recording seems a bit muted, almost as if some old recording equipment was mixed in with the new. I had to tinker a bit with my amplifier to try for a satisfying balance in the listening experience. I was only partially successful.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful disc.   January 19, 2000

The Godowsky-Schubert song transcriptions aren't very similar to the Liszt, (this is a given), but it's unfair, I tell you, unfair that everyone is familiar with the Liszt(s), whereas only a small few even know the Godowsky(s) exist(s), especially since the Godowsky(s) are far superior! They're so moving, so spiritual, and every note is just so well placed. These transcriptions are even closer to getting at the true meaning of the text(s) than Schubert could achieve, and they're using Schubert's music! The version of the Passacaglia on this disc is my favorite. There are only five versions of it out there, of course I have them all, but this one, it's perfect, absolutely perfect. Carlo Grante is an angel, he has no equal, he's my favorite living pianist. He loses attention to sell-outs like Marc Andre Hamelin and Volodos, but I'm hoping this won't go on for too much longer. There is no going wrong with this disc (or anything by Carlo Grante, for that matter). It's a desert island selection.
