She's been hailed for her multi-octave vocal range--a tool that sometimes detracts from her pop recordings, but actually works quite beautifully in the context of this charming holiday collection. Fans will surely approve of Carey's renditions of slinky secular songs like "Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)" and a nicely subdued "All I Want for Christmas Is You." But where she really surprises is in her unadorned delivery of a passel of traditional carols, highlighted by "Silent Night" (which she sings quietly, avoiding the temptation to wail those high notes) and "Jesus, Oh What a Wonderful Child." A must for diehards, and a pleasant surprise for the unconverted. --David Sprague

5 out of 5 stars All I want for Christmas is this CD!   November 23, 2009
Spyells (Long Beach, CA USA)
This Christmas album by Mariah Carey is a classic. I did not even realize that many of the classics played on the radio every season such as, "All I want for Christmas is You!" and "Christmas (Baby please come home)", were even Mariah Carey songs! I loved how the album had a gospel feel to it. Mariah made the songs her own even though she made the classics such as "Silent Night" traditional. I recommend this CD to anyone who is looking for a holiday album and does not know which one to buy. I give this CD five stars!

5 out of 5 stars Nice mix of original and traditional songs   September 8, 2009
Peter Durward Harris (Leicester England)
With three original songs, one of which became an international hit for Mariah, together with a cover of a Phil Spector classic, one cover of a very obscure traditional song (Jesus oh what a wonderful child), which I don't remember hearing before, and six tracks featuring covers of famous traditional songs, this album has something for everybody.

Mariah proves here that she can sing upbeat sons such as her big hit (All I want for Christmas is you) and her cover of the Phil Spector classic first recorded by Darlene Love (Christmas (baby please come home)), but she is equally capable with the slower songs such as her other two originals (Miss you most at Christmas time, Jesus born on this day).

Of the six tracks that are devoted to famous traditional songs, one is a two-song medley (Hark the heral angels sing, Gloria in Excelcis Deo) which, together with the other five (Silent night, O holy night, Joy to the world, Santa Claus is coming to town, God rest ye merry gentlemen) offer enough familiarity to make this a good album to play as background music. Mariah sounds good on these songs although among them, I think she sounds best on the medley and Santa Claus is coming to town. Personally, I like to hear her on the obscure stuff best, but it takes a brave singer to avoid the standards altogether when recording a Christmas album.

This is an excellent Christmas album that will give pleasure to many people, not just those who are fans of Mariah's other music.

5 out of 5 stars Mariah Carey - Merry Christmas   February 23, 2009

I hadn't listened to this album in entirety for a long time but found a lot of comfort in listening to it during this past holiday season and have been listening to certain tracks off and on since.

Honestly I bought it back when it was released but truly only listened to my favorite track, O HOLY NIGHT over & over. This is a well-balanced album that mixes standard holiday songs with Mariah's own heartfelt tracks which makes it an interesting album overall to listen to.

SILENT NIGHT - I love the vocal arrangement of the background singers, Melonie Daniels, Shanrae Price & Kelly Price

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU - instant modern classic with a do-wop arrangement

MISS YOU MOST (AT CHRISTMAS TIME) - although I love this track, I can't listen to it too often as it brings me to tears

JOY TO THE WORLD - love her rollicking rendition of this traditional song

JESUS BORN ON THIS DAY - Mariah sounds great & the addition of the childrens' choir makes this song special

SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN - another toe-tapping rollicking arrangement kicks up the "fun factor" of this song

HARK! THE HERALD ANGEL SINGS/GLORIA - the arrangement is terrific

JESUS, OH WHAT A WONDERFUL CHILD - takes me to church everytime I hear it

It's one of the best holiday albums I have in my collection and definitely one of my favorite Mariah albums.
