Pleurez, pleurez mes yeux... August 17, 2009 Irvino al-Montegue (Chicago, IL) I've seen/heard Madame Butterfly many times (fully stage, concert form, and recordings), sung by other good, principal singers; none of them comes close to how great this one is. Callas elevates Cio-Cio San and the opera to an ideal (my ideal) form of drama. I'm also very amazed by how she's able to portray the character development so well with nothing but her voice! She does it here just as well as she did in Tosca (1953 recording). Her phrasing is very captivating; she creates an eloquent and poised Cio-Cio San, and you can't help but empathize with that fragile, little and betrayed butterfly that she is, and your heart trembles along with hers in her captive state. So much hope and so much loss. The tragic end is heartbreaking and disarmingly beautiful at the same time. At the end, it leaves you in a weird sort of melancholic state: heartbroken, wet-eyed, but also incredulously amazed and happy about this great achievement in art (music in general and the recording of it)...most notably by Callas and of course, by the genius of Puccini.

Does one need another Butterfly? June 1, 2009 tom h. (Greenport, NY) For myself I can only say that this set is one of the most engrossing, moving, stirring, tear-jerking, etc. etc. sets I've ever heard.
What that means is I was focusing on the story, not on Callas' singing or Von Karajan's conducting or anything else. Just the story of a former geisha and her American lover.
When this is the case, when one is focusing on the story and not the success or failure of the musicians and performers, then the musicians and performers have succeded in the highest possible way.

Puccini.
Up there with Mozart when it comes to tearing the heart out of your soul.
Maria Callas - what a sexy women - no wonder that rich Greek fella courted her. She is a diamond, a truly wonderful opera singer. No, she is better than that. Maria Callas interprets the music into an emotional fury that extends passion and mundanity to their horizons.
Why buy Playboy when you can get the real deal right here. Smouldering femininity with knobs on. Simply the best.
Callas, an over-rated soprano December 22, 2006 Alex Bond (Australia) 3 out of 19 found this review helpful
Nicolai Gedda as B.F Pinkerton is brilliant, a true showman in the role and a brilliant tenor full-stop. Callas on the other was not good at Cio-Cio San, in fact she was terrible.
It truly shows the difference between the two lead roles vocal technique and capability, in 'Vogliatemi bene', Gedda was brilliant note perfect and tone perfect, Callas was terrible she shrieked most of her way through the duet and sang a shrill top C at the end which compared with Gedda's masterful top C was a piece of dirt.
If you disagree listen the the track over and over again, see how shrill and whiney Callas's top C really is.
All over brilliant performance by Gedda, Callas was unworthy of such a great Pinkerton.
It's a SHOCK! December 21, 2005 Vissi d'arte 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
It's a SHOCK how Callas interpreted "Madama Butterfly" It's close to perfect. Must listen for opera lovers!
