5 out of 5 stars All-Time Christmas Best!   January 26, 2009
Peter Mccormick
This is easily my all-time favorite Christmas collection. There are other excellent choir albums, of course, but the Robert Shaw Chorale is the finest in every way, and inclusion of the (rarely performed) Boar's Head song puts this one at the top. EVERYONE who likes traditional Christmas music should own this album.

5 out of 5 stars Exceedingly Good Christmas Music   January 12, 2009
Lionel C. C. Twain (Hayward, CA USA)
If you like the sound of well-arranged human voices, and you also like traditional Christmas Carols, then this is the album for you.
Songs of Angels - Christmas Hymns and Carols, by Robert Shaw, is my personal favorite Christmas album. It has many familiar English carols, as well as English renderings of German, French, Italian and even Spanish favorites, all executed in a richly elegant a cappella.
Even if one has never heard some of the more esoteric offerings, most if not all will rapidly "grow" on you.
If you're looking for Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph, or the Little Drummer Boy, look elsewhere. This album is Choral music and most songs are over a hundred years old. Songs of Angels brings back the old-fashioned Christmas atmosphere.

2 out of 5 stars all the songs sound the same   January 9, 2009

Everything is well sung, but the whole CD sounds the same. There's almost a militant quality to the way the songs are sung -so regimented, no character, no variation, no stand-out soloists. I was hoping to hear a little more 4-part harmony and less singing in unison. I was very disappointed because this was NOT what I was looking for. I am surprised that this CD is rated so highly,(which is why I bought it). I gave this CD to my mom who likes any hymns -regardless of how they are sung.

4 out of 5 stars Nice, old-fashioned carols   January 7, 2009
EMKW (Painted Post, NY)
Just what I was looking for: many of the old-time carols sung by a choir. No snazzy interpretations nor headliners. There were a few songs that were new to my ears but mostly it reminded me of those old LPs we pulled out at christmases back when people played LPs.
