Amazon.com essential recording Joan Sutherland is not usually considered a Puccini singer, and in fact she sang the role of Turandot only in the recording studio. But for that assignment she had exactly what was needed: a voice that seemed to have no upper limits and a personality that concealed vulnerability under an air of icy detachment. She also had an ideal set of colleagues, notably Luciano Pavarotti, whose "Nessun dorma" has become practically his signature tune. --Joe McLellan

G Puccini "Tourandot" Sutherland.Pavarotti. etc, Mehta, conducting September 19, 2009 Opal Rose (Southern New Jersey) This particular recording is recommended in several reputable opera sources as the best recording of "Turandot." I have seen a live performance, and this recording will not disappoint.
One of the best opera recordings June 20, 2009 John P. Mckinley (Vienna, VA USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had been looking for this version for some time and was glad to see that I could purchase it at Amazon. It is truly one of the great opera recordings of all time with Dame Sutherland as Turandot. Also in the cast are Pavarotti, Caballoe, Ghiaurov, Kruase and Pears and the London Philharmoin Orchestra conducted ny Zubin Mehta. Thank you Amazon for having this available.
The best Turandot imaginable February 21, 2009 Atypical (Winston-Salem, NC, USA) This was recorded in 1972, and everyone's voice is fresh and strong. Not every recording of Turandot can field two absolutely top ranked sopranos, but Dame Joan Sutherland and Montseratt Caballe are both fabulous. They could have switched roles as easily as each singing the one she had.
This features also my absolute FAVORITE recording of Luciano Pavarotti singing "Nessun Dorma." His riddle songs and "Non piangere Liu" are -- well the truth is that this is the most perfect recording of any audio only opera I own. It ranks, for me, with the movie version of _Carmen_ with Ruggiero Raimondi, Placido Domingo, Julia Mingines Jones, Faith Esham and others.
For an audio only disk to tie for number one with a DVD movie disc, the audio must be fabulous. It is.
Every singer's voice has special things that lend it wonder, and for Pavarotti, one of the things that is special and impossible to match is the wonderful warm roundness of his voice. More, he can produce that with character and power.
I have Carreras' DVD of Turandot with Eva Marton and Katia Riccarelli. He's fabulous, especially because of his skill as an actor, and I'm glad to have added that to my collection. Despite that, I am still glad that this Sutherland, Pavarotti, Caballe and Mehta recording is the first recording of Turandot, and the second recording of a full length opera I bought.
Among other things, the included libretto translates Italian into French, English and German, and the liner notes are astute and well written.
Get this recording. Yes, it's expensive, but it is worth every penny. No voice can match Pavarotti's for Calaf as recorded here. No voice can match Caballe, Sutherland or Ghiaurov's for their roles. Ping, Pang and Pong are fabulous!
Probably the ultimate performance February 16, 2009 J. Dow Granted that Eva Marton and Placido Domingo are the ultimate VISUAL performance of Turandot, Sutherland/Pavarotti may be the ultimate vocal performance, particularly the last scene of ACT III.
This CD is well worth buying. Indeed, don't be without it if you are a Turandot lover.

Sutherland and Pavarotti excel in Turandot January 25, 2009 Archie E. Phillips (Salt Lake City, UT USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This Opera by Puccini has been interpreted beautifully by the artists and the conductor and orchestra. The arias are remarkable and the duets are amazing. If you love sopranos, tenors, opera, or harmonies, this is the cd you need in your collection.
