| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Lyric mezzo-soprano Susan Graham stands out from the crowd for her expressive, opulent voice and communicative gifts. Someone at Sony has made the decision to place her in the public mind primarily as a singer of French works, and although it would be a shame to see her limited to that area of the repertoire, she does sing the French repertoire exceptionally. Graham sings sensitively and idiomatically in this group of 24 songs by Reynaldo Hahn (1875-1947), a Venezuelan-born, French-reared composer and conductor who knew how to craft a song like few others. In such lovely songs as "A Chloris," which opens the album, and "Je me souviens," Hahn creates a bevy of beautiful little worlds, which Graham and the outstanding pianist Roger Vignoles present in memorable form. This album belongs in the collection of all lovers of song. --Sarah Bryan Miller

An Hour of Pure Rapture August 18, 2009 R. N. Shagam (Albuquerque, NM USA) I hadn't heard of Reynaldo Hahn until I happened to hear a broadcast of Graham's 2009 Ravinia recital of French art songs. She sang only A Chloris as an encore, but at the intermission interview had talked about how she was first introduced to Hahn's songs. Hearing A Chloris, I was hooked and immediately downloaded her album. Gorgeous singing and sensitive accompaniment. I only wish that Amazon downloads included the liner notes--presumably I might have been treated to the lyrics in translation.
Splendid, unique recording June 10, 2009 Daniel R. Moreira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) Susan Graham is at the peak of her career in these marvellous interpretations of Hahn's mélodies. She and Roger Vignoles have produced nothing short of perfection. Rare beauty.
exquisite passion November 29, 2008 Linda Miller (Australia) Susan Graham was born to sing Hahn's lovely music. Her interpretations of Hahn's decadent, languourous, sophisticated and ironic yet tender and amusing lyrics are entirely delicious. It is clear why Proust loved this man - his music is a perfect companion to A La Recherche de Temps Perdu. The title of the album suggests its affinity with the chamber music of Faure and Saint-Saens, but it is closest to Poulenc. Perhaps the accompanyment on this recording could take a step back, but this is a quibble - perhaps the musicians are en fleur? Loves it to death: the perfect present for any Proust addict.
Exquisite singer; extraordinary recording September 30, 2007 Geraldine Hubbell (Lafayette,LA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Susan Graham is an incredible artist and
this is one of my favorite of her CDs.
Hearing her in person is even better; her musicality,
her diction, her style, her physical appearance on stage,
add to the sheer beauty of her voice. The one time I heard
her in person, I was stunned.
The recital was as close to perfection as one can get.
I highly recommend this CD and any other CD of Susan Graham.
