5 out of 5 stars My favorite   November 4, 2009
Richard Stewart (Beaufort, SC USA)
I have several versions of these sonatas including the DVD of Anne-Sophie Mutter with Lambert Orkis and the CD performed on fortepiano and early violin by Malcolm Bilson and Sergiu Luca. You must look to other reviews for proper analysis, but I much prefer this performance for its balance between the performers as well as its production. The Bilson-Luca is spirited and challenging, though I found the timbre of the instuments wearing after a while. I like early music, but early violin after Bach and Biber seems like modern violin with a headcold. The DVD Mutter version is a bit annoying in that she leaves the stage after each sonata -- acceptable in actual concert performance, which it is, but seemingly unnecessary when you are accustomed to hearing the next piece without major interruption and applause on CD. The works do have an intimacy that makes the video a particularly enjoyable addition. I haven't compared all the performances back to back, but I prefer Mutter's interpretation of the E Minor K. 304 movement Tempo de Menuetto, delicate and feminine -- how my wife and I would be playing it if we had only kept up our lessons after high school. One of the sweetest things I have ever heard. And she has striking stage presence -- she's a dish. I cannot praise the Perelman-Barenboim recording enough for the genius of the performers and the magic with which share their understanding of these exquisite pieces. Mozart must be smiling. (But then that rascal just might go for the DVD.) For the price-minded P-B is an incredible bargain. For those not price-minded buy them all and enjoy them in their own way.

The professionalism of the pianist and violinist makes this a wonderful set of cds to have and to listen to. They seem to feel what he felt when he wrote the music. I am enjoying it.

This is a beautifully recorded set, the music is... well, it is Mozart. You either like it or you don't. I listen to these CDs constantly with my infant son, including playing it for him to fall asleep to most nights. It is simultaneously playful and relaxing. Recording quality is high, as is the performance.

Highly recommended!

My knowledge of classical music is quite minimal. I can not therefore compare this rendition to any other, although I have some trouble imagining anything clearer or more beautiful. What I can say is that Mozart's music, more then nearly any other art, incites in me a tremendous emotional response, and that this set in all its brilliant playful glory ought to be required listening for anyone who considers classical music snobby or boring.

Mozart is my most favorite composer, Perlman my most favorite violinist, and Barenboim my second most favoriate pianist (Vladimir Ashkenazy being my first). When you have all three together, even more spendid!

I also recommend Barenboim's Mozart Piano Sonotas. I personally think it is the best Mozart Piano Sonata set out there.
