This mischievious recital celebrates works inspired by the Devil: from Tartini's Devil's Trill, written after the composer dreamt that he had sold his soul to the Devil, to the infernal whirlwinds of Saint-Saën's Danse Macabre and Dompierre's Les Beautés du diable, composed specifically for La Pietà. It also pays homage to Paganini, the famed violinist who once confided to a friend that the Devil led him by the hand. This program shows an impish sense of humor as well... it features a unique arrangement of The Rolling Stones' Paint it Black and Sympathy for the Devil! Angèle Dubeau is one of Canada's most prominent recording artists. belonging to the exclusive group of Canadian classical soloists who can boast of having attained "gold" sales status. She is also the founder and director La Pietá. This CD is packaged with a bonus DVD featuring video clips and live concert excerpts.

I downloaded this as MP3 by accident (you know, can't turn off "one click" and the
mouse slipped while scrolling).
It is arrangements of (mostly) common things for violin and orchestra (
including, of course, the 24th caprice, which is really for violin solo). These
are nice arrangements that are easy on the ear. In other words, "pops"
arrangements. Not actually bad (except the 24th caprice, which should sound impossibly hard.)

I Love love love this CD! Someone gave the CD to me years ago and it is played in my office time and time again as the infectious movement of the music really gets me going in a productive mode. This is also the CD that really spurred me to want to learn to play the violin. I recommend the CD to anyone who enjoys the kind of music that takes over your mind and wills you to interact with it.

Passionate, stirring renditions of dark beauties that make your heart pound in it's macabre dance. Spirited, yet filled with complexities to entice your inner nymph. A must have.
