| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com essential recording "We wanted a tough album," producer Quincy Jones recalls in a bonus interview on this special edition of Bad. Though the 1987 blockbuster would appear to be Michael Jackson's most personal statement to date--9 of its 11 cuts were written solely by him--its appeal also rested more on craft than the idiosyncratic art of Thriller and Off the Wall. At the same time, most of Bad has aged well in spite of its digital brittleness and MIDI treatments of gems like Jimmy Smith's organ solo on the title track. While the third best of his first three Epic solo discs, Bad carries a lot of what people love about Jackson's music. This disc also benefits from two fine outtakes, the exciting, uptempo "Streetwalker" and the Carpenters homage "Fly Away." Either could easily have extended the record's run of hit singles. --Rickey Wright

It's Cool November 24, 2009 Joseph Adams (Superior, WI USA) This 1987 followup to Thriller, the berst selling album of all time, is one of his best albums. The title track gets things off well, parodied by Weird Al. Other stand out tracks are The Way You Make Me Feel, Man in the Mirror, Smooth Criminal and Leave Me Alone. Now deceased, it's a good time to rediscover the music of one the world's best and most famous entertainers.
Collection of Catchy Songs by Michael as a Superstar Entertainer November 24, 2009 Yusuke Iwasaki (Tokyo, Japan) Michael Jackson's third solo album, Bad, is more electrified comparing to the previous albums--tracks produced by Quincy Jones are more synthesized and drum programming is substantially used. As a result, the sound become less intriguing but the simplified tracks underscore catchy melodies of songs written by Michael, including four out of the five consecutive number ones on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. While showing off his talent as a singer/songwriter with the album, he is more focusing on establishing as a superstar entertainer with multiple talents, including dance performance that now draws more attention from his fans.
Rad. November 10, 2009 Joseph M. Perorazio (Columbus, OH USA) The most 80's-sounding of his albums, 'Bad' has not aged as well as Thriller or Off the Wall, mostly due to its musical arrangements, which conjure up images of big hair and skinny ties. This was a safe album for Jackson, capitalizing on Thriller's strengths and making R&B/Funk palatable to white America. By mixing in touches of rock and new wave, cross-cultural appeal was guaranteed, and although the record sold astronomically well, it has not become an all-time classic. 'Bad' is still good, it's just not the cultural phenomenon 'Thriller' was. But it is classic 80's pop.
Michael Jackson's Bad CD October 29, 2009 Sheilah A. Clark (Chicagoland, Illinois) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If anyone ever wanted to hear what it took to make this album then they should buy this to hear Quincy Jones give his own interpretation of how the 33 songs Michael Jackson wrote either made it to the album or not. Very entertaining as well as interesting and comical in parts. Just buy it and you will see!
Special Edition & Original "BAD" -- Collect both!! October 28, 2009 Snow (Honolulu, Hawaii) When this album was first released I could not figure out why it was considered "rock" or a transition to "rock". I still can't figure it out over 20 years later. But, listening to Michael Jackson's work in 2009 underscores how sophisticated an artist and singer he really was with songs like "Man in the Mirror" and "Smooth Criminal". He was only 28 years old (or younger) when he created all of this work which was released just two days following his 29th birthday, on August 31, 1987. These songs took him into the next decade without sounding dated---that is genius!
After Michael Jackson's death, I purchased the Special Edition and a copy of the original version released in Japan. The gem on the original version is the introduction for the song "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" where he speaks a verse before he begins singing.
Don't understand why the following spoken introduction was removed from the later versions of the song:
I just want to lay next to you for awhile/You look so beautiful tonight/Your eyes are so lovely/Your mouth is so sweet/A lot of people misunderstand me/That's because they don't know me at all/I just want to touch you/I need you/I love you so much
See: "Bad(album " at Wikipedia for a list of additions and omissions between the Special Edition and the original Bad albums.
