| Customer Reviews: The Finest Effort on Record February 24, 2009 Booboo (London) Mr. Adam Aleksander may not have a big profile in the world of classical music - yet - but this effort with the mammoth Godowsky Sonata in E minor is, in my view, the finest recording made of the masterpiece and should land him at center stage soon. Aleksander's virtuosity and passion conflate to captivate, then lull into a trance, a listener who is lucky enough to sit down and really listen to this CD. Mind you, there are other great recordings out there, such as Sherbakov's and Hamelin's, but Aleksander's playing evokes images of life at the start of the 20th century and all of the drama that was contained within that period in inimitably wonderful style. That's what puts it at the front of the queue.
The Sonata itself is as much a work reflecting the tragic romance of its time as well as Godowsky's genius. Indeed, we are fortunate that Godowsky took the time to pen such a masterwork. We are even more fortunate that Aleksander endured what must have been a Herculean effort to master it in the way he as. It is a sensational reading.
In time, Aleksander's greatness will be realized and appreciated. If he's performing anywhere near you, go see him. (And if he chooses to give the Sonata in recital, you'll have an unforgettable experience.) Ten years from now Aleksander tickets will be a lot more expensive, believe me!
Great Pianist Deserves More Recognition October 24, 2007 piano92 The pianist Adam Aleksander uses his mammoth technique and mature musical insight to capture the character of this piece just like Godowsky would have wanted it. This is truly a great performance of an incredibly difficult piece. Godowsky Sonata isn't that well known but has been recorded by a couple of pianists. Aleksander was the first one to record it although that same year, the Canadian pianist Marc-Andre Hamelin recorded it also. Although Hamelin plays with his typical flawless technique I think that Aleksander has a better understanding of the work as a whole and makes it musical through a deep, insightful interpretation. I highly recommend this CD and Adam Aleksander's other Cd where he plays works by Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Beethoven and Szymanowski.
