For its first new set of music since 2000's Warning, Green Day tears up the blueprint and comes up with something unexpected: a punk rock concept album built around elaborate melodies, odd tempo changes, and a collection of songs that freely reference classic rock warhorses like the Beatles and Pink Floyd. "She's a Rebel" and "St. Jimmy" might sound like vintage Green Day, but the rest of the disc finds the Northern California trio trying on a variety of different guises: "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" is a cliché-strewn Foo Fighters-style power ballad; "Extraordinary Girl" floats on Indian strings; and the hushed "Wake Me Up When September Ends" wouldn't sound entirely out of place on a Jessica Simpson record. It doesn't always work. "Dearly Beloved" eerily resembles the Alarm's "68 Guns," while the title track eerily resembles something Green Day has already done far too many times. But, overall, American Idiot represents a promising step forward. --Aidin Vaziri

Album Description
The first original album since 2000 from modern rock superheroes Green Day, American Idiot is one of the most anticipated and controversial albums of the year. Scathing yet self-effacing as it tells the tale of Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, American Idiot is the punk rock epic. "A bold, polished punk opera." (Entertainment Weekly) "They're the biggest, most successful, punk band the world has ever seen. What's more, Green Day's next album may well be their masterpiece." (Kerrang!)

5 out of 5 stars The hallmark album in my collection   September 24, 2009
J. Dudenake
Many people have called Green Day "sell-outs" or "modern rock/punk posers", but I beg to differ those opinions. True in their early days of "Kerplunk!" and "Dookie" they had a punk sound and were full of angst and rebellion, but one can't stay young forever. The prior album to this was "Warning". That's a great album too, but this one (American Idiot) is the hallmark album of their careers. This album also shows the bands maturity and it shows they have a bit of a soft side. "Wake Me Up When September Ends" is about Billy Joe's fathers death and also references to 9/11. For a band to be taken seriously, they need to show some softness and emotion. After 5 years of this albums release, I still get a little emotional when I hear that song. The first single, however, is pretty straight forward. Why conform to the accepted American norm? Don't be American Idiots people! Yes, this is not the first rock opera ever released in the history of music, but it is most certainly one of the best ever. I love every track on this album. I am thirsty for more Billy, Mike and Tre. Please keep on rocking until you are in your 50s!! (Did I mention that I've loved Green Day since "Kerplunk"?)

5 out of 5 stars Kudos To Greenday For This One   September 23, 2009
Just Fell In (LA, California)
My hat goes off to Greenday for having the guts to write this gem of a concept album. I'll bet that the majority of the American public that bought this didn't even realize or care about the message and intricacy in the lyrics, concept and flow of this masterpiece of a punk album. For those of you that noticed, welcome to the suburban world of American Idiot, where the real idiots are the listeners that are parodied without their consent or even their knowledge. For those of you that got it, lets do something to change the dismal state of affairs of this great country. Talk about it and make others see that we need to pull together and make some changes before it's too late. Kudos again to Greenday!! All the accolades, sales and praise that they received is well-deserved. This will go down in music history as one of the greatest moments in punk/rock.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums of my generation!   May 29, 2009

AI is an incredible album! I just can't get enough of it. It's deep, poignant, beautiful, powerful. It's so many things. They just really got it right, I don't know how else to say it. I purchased this as my third or forth copy of this album as I have either worn out accidentally scratched others. I couldn't imagine not having it in my collection at all times. If you haven't done so, skip past the singles and listen to the lesser known tracks. Follow along with the lyrics, this album tells the story of a generation.
