4 out of 5 stars Delightful Music, Played with Some Real Panache   November 6, 2009

Ms Schrade here gives us a chance to hear several of the famous Johann Strauss II transciptions which were such a popular fixture in the repetoires of the great turn of the century piano virtuosos. The most famous of these is the first, the Concert Arabesques by Schulz-Evler based on The Blue Danube. Old timers will recall a legendary recording of this very selection - the first on Ms Schrade's collection - by the unparalleled Josef Lhevinne - it can still be found on a Naxos label, with a restoration by Ward Marston. Lhevinne: The Complete Recordings
The recording closes with two long transciptions, one by Korngold using themes from a number of Strauss waltzes, and an astonishing one, taken from Strauss' "Künstlerleben", by the now largely forgotten pianistic titan, Leopold Godowsky. It's ridiculously difficult, but Ms Schrade takes on the challenge, and you can only tip your hat to her for not only getting through the beast, but even more remarkably, seeming to actually be having fun along the way!

This purely 'display music' may not lend itself to everyone, but for those who do not turn and run at the thought of more than one Strauss waltz at a sitting there is much to charm. Many of the passages require superior skills, and Ms Schrade seems sufficent unto the challenge. The only drawback is the realization while listening that despite her achievement in bringing the music alive these pieces can be played with even more dash, excitement and thrills. Yet all and all, lovely music-making.

Good notes accompany the Cd, and the artist has added a short transciption of her own, "The Kiss Waltz", fittingly composed for her husband.

Centaur's catalog offers a number of pianists of talent who have been overlooked in the hoopla of never-ending recording industry hype. On this recording, made in November 2003 in the artist's home town, Mew York City, Ms Schrade plays a Hamburg Steinway. I wonder what the local New York Steinway craftsmen think of such a distinct snub to their own efforts at making Steinway pianos?

Very fine playing of Straus transcriptions, including many of the most famous themes from the Waltz King. No bombast here--just beautifully judged and nuanced renditions from a very fine pianist who obviously loves this music. Highly enjoyable. I would like to hear more from this fine artist. Good natural sound.
