Decca seems set to release their music in collections at bargain prices - these 5CD "Ultimate" sets are one such example. The only possible problem with these sets is possible duplication of recordings as some of these were available standalone for full price.

What is available here:

CD1: Vivaldi - Four Seasons with Mariana Sirbu - everyone has at least a recording of these popular concertos and you may wonder whether it's worth getting yet another one. I think it is worth getting this one - Sirbu's playing is brilliant and unlike in many other recordings, the soloist isn't put forward at the expense of the orchestra (and of the music). This is a yardstick performance by which others should be measured.

CD2: This contains a selection of great baroque pieces conducted by Karl Munchinger with the orchestra he founded. Classic recording.

CD3: Handel's Fireworks and Water Suite - conducted by Raymond Leppard - again, this is worth having even if you already have a different recording. This is brilliant playing.

CD4: Bach's Orchestral Suites - conducted by Neville Marriner - another top notch performance of great music.

CD5: This is crossing into Romantic territory with Giuliani's and Paganini's works, but its inclusion here is justified by the Vivaldi concertos. If you like guitar music, you should also check Ultimate Classical Guitar: The Essential Masterpieces [Box Set]. Vivaldi's concertos are what you might expect and Giuliani's is one of the best guitar concertos ever written.

In summary, there's a lot of great music here for the price - most of these performances are hard to beat, so if you're just starting a collection, or you're looking for yet another performance of these pieces, this is a great buy.

Just as advertised.
The Best of the best in Baroque Music recordings. The clear and beautiful instruments retain original sounds and specifications.
The music has just the right mixture of depth with melodies which are always light and tuneful, entertaining and yet calming and relaxing.
Those who are fortunate enough to purchase this boxed set have a wonderful and uplifting experience awaiting them. A fundamental element in any real music lovers library. This strikes a perfect balance, with peace and tranquility achieved through sound.

These are world-class arrangements of works from the height of Western musical tradition. It's a delightful discovery to find more than ninety songs in MP3 format for less than $15.
