Album Description If on a Winter's Night presents an arc of songs that conjure the season of spirits, the eerie silences of the snow; days of solitude and reflection for some, a time of re-birth and celebration for many. With traditional music of the British Isles as their starting point, Sting and his guest musicians draw the listener in through a collection of songs, carols, and lullabies spanning the centuries - such as The Snow it Melts the Soonest (traditional Newcastle ballad), Soul Cake (traditional English "begging" song) Gabriel's Message (14th century carol), as well as two of Sting's own compositions - Lullaby for an Anxious Child and The Hounds of Winter. Also featured on the album is Hurdy Gurdy Man - a musical reworking and English translation (by Sting) of Der Leiermann from Schubert's classic winter song-cycle Winterreise. For this exploration of the themes and emotions of winter Sting is joined by friend and long time colleague, guitarist Dominic Miller - and an ensemble of three remarkable musicians from Northern England and Scotland: Kathryn Tickell (fiddle and Northumbrian pipes) Julian Sutton (melodian) and Mary MacMaster (metal string Scottish harp). Additional guest artists include Vincent Ségal (cello), Daniel Hope (violin), Chris Botti (trumpet), Ibrahim Maalouf (trumpet), Stile Antico (vocal ensemble), Cyro Baptista (percussion), Bijan Chemirani (percussion) and the Webb Sisters (vocals). Together they've created an album with a wonderful, warm, and unique ensemble sound - an acoustic meditation on winter.
Album Description 2009 release from the multi-million selling singer, songwriter, musician and former leader of The Police. This release is dedicated to Sting's favorite season, Winter: a season which has inspired countless songwriters over the centuries and produced a wealth of music exploring all of its many guises. If On a Winter's Night... presents an arc of songs that conjures the season of spirits, resulting in a haunting, spiritual and reflective musical journey. ''The theme of winter is rich in inspiration and material,'' comments Sting; ''by filtering all of these disparate styles into one album, I hope we have created something refreshing and new.''

One of Sting's Best Solo Works to Date November 26, 2009 musicalcharge (Berkeley, CA) I am a Sting fan, it is true, but I am not blinded by being one. I recognize when he has an experiment that fails, such as Songs From the Labyrinth, but it is clear that he has learned from that failure. If On A Winter's Night is a subtle yet sophisticated album, that reflects the long lifetime of Sting's musicianship. Yes, it doesn't sound like his years with The Police, but that was about 30 years ago! Musicians who don't evolve in 30 years are, simply put, bad ones.
A great anti-dote to Christmas albums November 26, 2009 Matthew Buckley-Golder (Toronto, ON Canada) The great thing about this album is that, when you are interested in listening to something that complements the season but you are emotionally exhausted by Christmas music, you can put this album on and it will totally rejuvenate your spirit. It is such a great complement to the season of winter, as it restores the balance by tugging in a direction opposite to that of Christmas music.
As others have said here, it is a "winter" album, and there are not enough of these around.
I don't want to review the individual songs because, in this case, they are part of a total work and you just have to take the whole thing in.
"The Hounds of Winter" is not the same one as previously recorded. It is the same song, but not the same version. It has been re-done to fit the character of this album.
You will know whether the above description appeals to you. If it does, the album is very much recommended.
warning - this is a very sophisticated retro classical fusion and there are no Christmas carols to speak of... November 25, 2009 Rolfe J. Taylor (va) A remarkable CD that plays like classical music in a contemporary song format. The instrumentation is sometimes wonderfully medieval, always acoustic, sometimes celtic, sometimes a little operatic and incredibly atmospheric. Light some candles, turn of the electric lights, sit by the fire and be transported to a different time.
Get's better and better... November 24, 2009 VERYSORRY (Los Angeles, Ca United States) Finally a mood for winter. Christmas and so much more. Living in Southern California we need all the help we can get believing that it is winter. Sting's "if On A Winter's Night..." is an excellent choice to get one through this season. It does get better and better. No putting away on Christmas afternoon.
It's sting, but not like he used to be November 24, 2009 Timothy A. Taylor Sting has an incredible flavor to all of his works. This is pretty much a follow up album to Songs from the labyrinth. What I love about Sting is he's not afraid to try something new. This is more simple madrigal music. I listened to it a couple of times and enjoyed it, but compared to his other albums which have been different and interesting I thought this was pretty bland. Not a bad album, but not up to my expectations.
