4 out of 5 stars For Fans Of KT Tunstall And Sarah McLachlan!   November 24, 2009
Philip R. Heath (Hurst, TX United States)
Give Up The Ghost is Brandi Carlile's third CD, but it is the first one of hers that I have bought. I can say that I very much look forward to checking out her other releases based on what I've heard on Give Up The Ghost. I love good female singer/songwriters, and Carlile reminds me of a number of my favorites yet is still original in her own right.

Give Up The Ghost has a heavy dose of acoustic guitar, but it is not a simple folk CD. The balance of acoustic and electric instruments reminds me of KT Tunstall's Eye To The Telescope. Give Up The Ghost has the same kind of energy to it. The opener "Looking Out" starts out softly with acoustic guitar, but the other energy grows to the chorus. I liked how the instrumentation builds in concert with Carlile's vocal delivery. Another song that follows a similar pattern is "Dreams". However Give Up The Ghost has its share of more pure folk songs between the up tempo "Dying Day" to the ballad "Pride And Joy". On the latter, Carlile's falsetto delivery reminds me of Sarah McLachlan with a bit of a twang. The same is true of the piano driven "Before It Breaks". Most of the songs also feature good vocal harmonies at a minimum on the chorus. Finally, I enjoyed the added texture of cello on songs such as "Dying Day" and "Before It Breaks".

Carlile also has some fairly high powered guests on Give Up The Ghost. Benmont Tench of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers plies his craft on organ and piano on "Pride And Joy", "I Will", and "Touching The Ground". However the more recognizable guest is Elton John who drops in for a duet on "Caroline". It was interesting to hear him in more of a folk context, but the song works quite well. Yet none of the guests are there to prop up Carlile as she has plenty of talent on her own.

Overall, Give Up The Ghost is one of the best female singer/songwriter CDs that I've heard this year. If you are a fan of KT Tunstall or Sarah McLachlan, you should check out Brandi Carlile. I'm glad that I did, and I intend to work back through her previous CDs in order to hear some more of her work.

5 out of 5 stars A Stunning Sophmore Effort   November 24, 2009
D Preston (Forks, WA)
This is one of those times when the critical acclaim is well-deserved. Brandi Carlile is a talented songwriter and has a voice to match. I actually could have done without the Elton John collaboration which veers way into more poppy territory. The voice captivates and the lyrics of songs like "I Will" stick with you. It will be fascinating to see where she goes next in her musical journeys.

4 out of 5 stars Good album.   November 24, 2009
Joel J. Helbig (Toledo, OH USA)
It seems to me to be a little more up beat than her last album with more more instruments backing her up. Brandi's voice is still amazing and clear. Song writing is excellent. The album is just missing that certain something. Can't put my finger on it. Good, but not great.

5 out of 5 stars Nice album- Great Music!   November 15, 2009
Heidi R (MN)
I had the chance to review this album and have been impressed to say the least. I am a fan of differt types of music and this was a great surprise addition to my collection. The music is easy to listen to, doesn't all sound the same (which tends to happen too often) and quickly becomes a favorite. I had never heard of Brandi Carlile prior to this review, and have become a big fan. LOVE IT!

This latest CD by Brandi Carlile is amazing. Every song is capable of sticking in your head and lifting you up for the rest of the day!
