Upgrade to Windows 7

All editions of Windows XP and Windows Vista qualify you to buy an upgrade license.

1. Choose your edition of Windows 7
Explore key features and choose the edition that's best for you. Be sure to check the expanded list of extended features in Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, and Windows 7 Ultimate. System requirements vary for each edition of Windows 7 because some features might require special hardware.

2. See if your PC has what it takes to run Windows 7
In general, if your PC can run Windows Vista it can run Windows 7. To make sure, download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to do a quick check. If you want certain features, such as HomeGroup or Windows Media Center, check to see if your PC has the hardware that's needed.

3. Check which operating system your PC is currently running
How you make the move to Windows 7 depends on your current operating system.

  • Windows Vista
The transition to Windows 7 should be pretty smooth, although you may need to update your system to the latest service pack first.

  • Windows XP (or any other operating system)
Windows 7 is best experienced on a new PC with the latest hardware, but if your computer meets the minimum specifications, you can install Windows 7 on a PC running Windows XP. Windows 7 must be "custom" installed (also known as a "clean" installation) over Windows XP. Before beginning the installation, you'll need to copy your files and settings to an external drive. After Windows 7 has been installed you will need to re-install all of your programs using the original installation media and then copy over the files and settings you backed up to your external drive. Because Windows 7 requires a custom installation, we strongly recommend that you get help with this process from your local computer service provider.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the upgrade? Usually not   November 27, 2009
Michael V. Raffety (Chicago, IL USA)
If you're buying a new computer, absolutely get Windows 7. If you're running Vista, maybe get the upgrade. If you're running XP, don't bother with an upgrade, at least until Microsoft drops support and security patches for XP.

5 out of 5 stars Long overdue   November 27, 2009

I have held on to xp for long enough. Win 7 is a superior operating system - faster, less crashes and easy to use. Get it.
Upgrade from xp - no big deal. It does take time since you need to do a clean install. Switch to 64 bit is a good thing.

1 out of 5 stars Nightmare upgrading process   November 26, 2009

I've used every operating system from Microsoft since Dos. Windows 7 is pretty good and I'm happy with the performance and speed. However, the upgrade process from XP has been a nightmare, as reported by other users as well.

To begin with, I bought the downloadable version, which came in 3 files that took a long time to download but didn't work. No clear instructions were provided, and when I tried running that it didn't work. A great disappointment!

So, instead I got the DVD to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional. That happily wiped out my XP hard disk and installed, but several days later asked me for an activation key. When I put in my activation key it didn't work, saying it was for an upgrade, not a clean install. So now I have Windows 7 that refuses to activate, and installed within is software (such as Office) that has activation keys that DO work. What SHOULD have happened was that when installed it could have checked for a valid XP installation, and if existed, allowed the activation key to work. But of course microsoft decided to make things quite complex and treat me like a bloody criminal instead.

Overall I am very dissatisfied with the upgrade process. Bottom line: I've paid good money for it, and I don't have an operating system that will activate.

5 out of 5 stars Don't wait any longer!   November 24, 2009

If you are currently running Windows Vista you owe it to yourself to upgrade to Windows 7. This operating systems runs so much faster than Vista and everything is just easier to work with. Just powering up my desktop only takes about on one and a half minutes. Upgrading was simple but you will need to reinstall all of your application software, but everything works fine. Don't wait any longer, just do it!

Bought this to upgrade a HP laptop that I use at the house. Install was very fast and flawless. All device were detected and drivers loaded. System runs faster and more stable than when Vista was on it. Battery life also seems to be longer. All in all seems to be a great upgrade from Microsoft. Will be purchasing more copies the other systems.
