Product Description
My name is Ree. Some folks know me as The Pioneer Woman. After years of living in Los Angeles, I made a pit stop in my hometown in Oklahoma on the way to a new, exciting life in Chicago. It was during my stay at home that I met Marlboro Man, a mysterious cowboy with steely blue eyes and a muscular, work-honed body. A strict vegetarian, I fell hard and fast, and before I knew it we were married and living on his ranch in the middle of nowhere, taking care of animals, and managing a brood of four young children. I had no idea how I'd wound up there, but I knew it was exactly where I belonged. The Pioneer Woman Cooks is a homespun collection of photography, rural stories, and scrumptious recipes that have defined my experience in the country. I share many of the delicious cowboy-tested recipes I've learned to make during my years as an accidental ranch wife—including Rib-Eye Steak with Whiskey Cream Sauce, Lasagna, Fried Chicken, Patsy's Blackberry Cobbler, and Cinnamon Rolls—not to mention several "cowgirl-friendly" dishes, such as Sherried Tomato Soup, Olive Cheese Bread, and CrÈme BrÛlÉe. I show my recipes in full color, step-by-step detail, so it's as easy as pie to follow along. You'll also find colorful images of rural life: cows, horses, country kids, and plenty of chaps-wearing cowboys. I hope you get a kick out of this book of mine. I hope it makes you smile. I hope the recipes bring you recognition, accolades, and marriage proposals. And I hope it encourages even the most harried urban cook to slow down, relish the joys of family, nature, and great food, and enjoy life.

LOVE it, great stocking stuffer to boot! November 26, 2009 Tatooed Lady (Wisconsin, USA) I've followed Ree's blog, like many other reviewers. I even read the reviews before buying the book. I still decided to buy it...okay, FIVE copies of it, because I know several internet-challenged people that I think will really enjoy the book (I'm NOT going to cook for the entire neighborhood anymore!)... one that's got internet, but has enjoyed my re-creations of Ree's recipes... my 18 year-old son, who will SOMEDAY move out of the house, and I want him to eat better than fake potatoes and cheap mac & cheese...and myself, because sometimes it's nice to have an honest to god copy of something instead of a print-out that'll fade and get icky if it gets splatted, or a laptop across the kitchen.
That said...I didn't expect hundreds of new recipes. I didn't expect a SERIOUS cookbook with ONLY recipes. What I DID expect (and got 110% of) was Ree's twist on cooking, kidlets and life on a ranch. Personally, I LIKE the fun layout with pics of the family and farm. I LIKE the 127 pictures that accompany macaroni & cheese (okay, not 127, but PLENTY)...I REALLY like the little explanation of chaps, and I agree with Ree...yum!
So I give my review of 5 out of 5 stars, because the book "is what it is"...a fun read with some REALLY good recipes. Some really simple, some a bit more involved (requiring 3 arms, preparing ahead and a whisk).
Did anyone else notice that the olive cheese bread is different from the blog's recipe?
LOVE LOVE LOVE it! Thanks, Ree!!!!
I can never thank Ree enough. Ever. November 25, 2009 K. Pettit (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Before I got this cookbook or read Ree's blog I was a girl from a vegetarian home who knew nothing about cooking meat. Oh, and I had a need to learn how because of certain males in my life who like to eat meat. And like my food. I found her blog, and after reading, oh one or two recipes (I'd say Marlboro Man's Favorite Sandwich was what did me in) I immediately ran over and ordered this book. Since getting it in the mail, I have not been disappointed. There are perfect step-by-step recipes in here, wonderful for a former only vegetarian cook like me to learn from, and my God the food is all so delicious. I can't wait to try certain recipes out and see if they really are as good as she says.
Thank you Ree! You saved my butt!
As good as her blog. November 24, 2009 MissSavie (Cary, NC United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have been a faithful follower of [...] for a couple of years now and love reading her blog and cooking pages. This book reads like her blog and I was laughing while reading several pages and sharing them with my husband who loves her recipes. I loved flipping through the cookbook pages and seeing pictures of faces I've seen on her website. Although pictures of mud and manure might not be typical cookbook photos, they just fit with Ree's personality and add to the cookbook experience. I highly recommend this cookbook and the recipes even more!
Didn't meet my expectations November 24, 2009 Sally S. Killian (Indianapolis, IN United States) 6 out of 10 found this review helpful
Ree cooks the kind of food many of us grew up eating (or wish we did!). It's not trendy. It's the kind of food my family likes to eat, though I'll admit that I've not tried many of her recipes. I've been cooking since I was in high school -- before Ree was born -- and many of the recipes she presents are virtually identical to recipes I've been cooking for years. Of the recipes I have tried, only half have been "keepers" and the other half have fallen into the "please don't make this again" category. I've only tried one of the new recipes from the book and it wasn't a keeper. This isn't necessarily a bad thing; I don't expect to love or want to try every recipe in a cookbook. I've had the most success with her brisket and southwestern recipes. One of my favorite things about the recipes is that Ree doesn't rely heavily on manufactured ingredients. They're not absent, but there's not a heavy use of them.
I expected to love this cookbook and I'm so disappointed that I don't. I expected more from this cookbook, not more of the same. On her website and in the introduction to the book she said that there were several old favorites and many new recipes. There are only 65 recipes in this book; 38 have already appeared on her website.
One of my complaints about this cookbook is the same one I have with many current cookbooks: it's not user-friendly. It's not a book that is easy to take into the kitchen and use. This is more like a coffee table book and I'm afraid I'll splatter food on it while cooking.
I'm not a fan of the step-by-step photos. With pictures most of the recipes are 3 pages long and some are longer. I find them to be more of a nuisance than helpful. However, I think they're helpful to new cooks. I faithfully read the comments to Ree's recipes and I've come to realize that there are many people who aren't knowledgeable, skilled, or confident in the kitchen. If you didn't grow up watching and helping someone in your home cook meals daily, the pictures will probably be most helpful.
I don't appreciate all the fluff in this book -- the pictures and stories of life on the ranch, Marlboro Man, punks, other family and friends, cattle, horses and dogs. When a book is billed as a cookbook, I expect recipes.
I'm amazed at the number of 5-star reviews for this cookbook. I think they have a lot more to do with Ree's popularity than with the content of the book. In terms of how much is there and how good it is, it's an okay cookbook, but it's certainly not great. I feel cheated because over 50% of the recipes and 75% of the total content of the book is available for free at her website. I can't think of another cookbook author who could deliver so little and get rave reviews for it.
I'm also surprised by the fact that she didn't acknowledge or thank her many readers. Without them, she probably wouldn't have been able to publish this book, have it be in Amazon's top 100 long before it was published and received so much publicity.
There's not a lot here for experienced cooks or those who follow her blog. It's a better book for beginners and those unfamiliar with her blog -- and who don't mind all the fluff included.
A cookbook you can read front to back?? November 24, 2009 Jacqueline Friedland (Franklin, TN) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
How many cookbooks do you find that you can read front to back? Well, this is one of them! If you love Pioneer Woman's blog, you'll love this book! Even if you have never read her blog, you'll love this book! The recipes are amazing and easy to follow and she tells stories throughout which makes it a good read to boot! I highly recommend this book for anyone that loves good "down home" cooking.
