Misled and annoyed that the text-to-speech feature disabled! Big part of why I bought the Kindle and how I expected to get through this book. Rip off and I blame the publisher and Amazon.

Very detailed...I know more about Sweden then I ever thought I know...I totally enjoyed this read. Long,sometimes a bit to long but just the same a good read.

There was a lot in the structure of this book that I liked, most of the charactors, the settings and the mystery involving the young girl. I did not think that all the sex contributed anything to the story. I also thought that the resoluition of the financial angle has already been done one thousand times in movies like Trading Places and the Net.
Mikael Blomkvist, the finance writer, was an interesting and good selection to try and resolve an old mystery outside of his field of expertise. Lisbeth Salender was a compelling partner with her talents and faults. Her history though was unbelieveable, better to leave it a mystery.
It always annoys when the author goes over the top to sensationalize a charactor or the story for no good reason. I think that is what happened here. It reads as though somebody said we just have to add some sex, a full dose of impossible abuse for the young girl, and then to make the entire business family nearly totally crazy.

With nearly 700 reviews, many of them rave, I feel silly even writing one but what the heck.
Having lost mucho dough in the economic downturn I had an aversion to the book out of the gate, it innitially having much to do with economics and investigative reporting. However, I was soon swept up in the strange charm this book wields over most people who pick it up. It quickly becomes much more than a book about the markets and the media. There is something awkwardly dated about the writing and story, even when a translation is taken into account. The anachronistic effect of once trendy topics set in the context of a culture not your own (so the twists and turns, environments, mores and traditions are news - they drink an awful lot of coffee in Sweden and at all hours) renders the story both fresh and familiar. This quality adds to the charm and vibrant mystery of the novel. And while it not in the least devoid of a dark side, creepy scenes are energetic and exciting but not so murky they left me wanting a shower. Also, the computer geek, so exhausted a character at this point, felt new and unusual - not at all cliched. If this book had been written by an American it would be unreadable but nothing could be further from the truth regarding "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo". It is a fully engaging, unique page turner.

Very rare when you find a book series that captures your attention with story, characters and skilled writing. Looking forward to final series in 2010 of 'girl who kicked hornet's nest'. We'll miss you Stieg Larsson.....
