Amazon.com Review Amazon Best of the Month, October 2009: An investigation into a cold-blooded murder introduces Detective Harry Bosch to a Chinese underworld lurking in the dark recesses of the City of Angels. Its tentacles are far reaching, yet it remains shrouded in secrecy due to time-honored cultural traditions that keep the exploited from speaking out. To the victim's family, Bosch promises revenge, but when his own daughter suddenly becomes a target, he promises blood. However, working a case with leads on both sides of the Pacific provides little room (or time) for error. 9 Dragons is a gritty, coffee-and-cigarettes crime thriller full of smart twists and generous helpings of suspense. Fans of Michael Connelly can expect another exceptional thrill ride, while newcomers will be immediately engaged by the tortured and unrelenting Bosch. "He knew one day it would come to this, that the darkness would find [his daughter] and that she would be used to get him," writes Connelly. "That day was now." --Dave Callanan
Product Description LAPD Detective Harry Bosch is off the chain in the fastest, fiercest, and highest-stakes case of his life.
Fortune Liquors is a small shop in a tough South L.A. neighborhood, a store Bosch has known for years. The murder of John Li, the store's owner, hits Bosch hard, and he promises Li's family that he'll find the killer.
The world Bosch steps into next is unknown territory. He brings in a detective from the Asian Gang Unit for help with translation--not just of languages but also of the cultural norms and expectations that guided Li's life. He uncovers a link to a Hong Kong triad, a lethal and far-reaching crime ring that follows many immigrants to their new lives in the U.S.
And instantly his world explodes. The one good thing in Bosch's life, the person he holds most dear, is taken from him and Bosch travels to Hong Kong in an all-or-nothing bid to regain what he's lost. In a place known as Nine Dragons, as the city's Hungry Ghosts festival burns around him, Bosch puts aside everything he knows and risks everything he has in a desperate bid to outmatch the triad's ferocity.

Harry Bosch is so Good -- and so is "9 Dragons" November 28, 2009 Mel I've read every Harry Bosch book. And this one is maybe the best of the last five. Nothing can compete with the 'early' Bosch books, but 9 Dragons is worth your time. Michael Connelly is a superb writer. He always delivers and he has done it again. The ending is terrific. I doubt anyone could have known where this was heading. Just a book worth reading.
Get it at the Library November 27, 2009 SandyCB (Urbana, IL) I've read and enjoyed all the Harry Bosch books -- except this one. Harry investigates a case that refers back to one of his most powerful novels in the series, then he drops the ball in every way possible. To me this book read like a person at a party who starts telling a pretty interesting story, then segues into a long story only marginally related to the first one before trying to go back to the original story -- that's a leap that's hard to make, and it didn't work for me here at all. The original case isn't exciting, but it was moving right along until we're thrown into a story that reads like one of those cold war spy thrillers where the corpses barely have names, they die so fast. Then we're back, and it's a really bumpy landing. The plot twist isn't believable, either the motivation or even that Bosch would recognize the bit of evidence that solves the case. I thought that it would at least turn out to be insurance fraud (Bosch knows something about the victim that should have made him wonder if there was a motive to collect insurance), but instead the solution went against cultural norms and had his partner behaving totally out of character. Bosch doesn't react to events that demand a response in Hong Kong and when he returns to L.A. things get so absurd I found myself wondering if Connelly had any kids himself. Kids aren't puppies, and unless Harry marries or hires a nanny pronto he'll be going up against child welfare authorities on his next case. I agree with Harry Bosch on one thing: I hope he stays in L.A. and never sees Hong Kong again.
9 Dragons Breathes Little Fire November 25, 2009 Blue Duck (Plano, TX USA) I just could not get caught up in this Harry Bosch novel like I did in all the previous ones. Seemed hurried with a couple of stage lefts that I found dissapointing. I will wait for the next one, however.
9 Ovations November 25, 2009 Stoney (Miami, FL) THE SETUP
John Li, a Chinese shopkeeper is shot and killed in his store in Los Angeles. Evidence points toward a Triad member who had been collecting regular extortion. Soon after he is arrested, detective Harry Bosch recieves a video from his daughter, who is living in Hong Kong, showing her to have been kidnapped.
COMMENTS
9 Dragons begins WITHOUT a teaser---a loathsome device which has become standard in mystery-thrillers to catch bookstore browsers with up-front action. In most cases, teasers only mislead or confuse readers. THANK YOU Michael Connelly!!!
Although with plenty of twists and turns, the plot is straightforward and easy to follow. The characters are interesting, relatively few, well developed, memorable, and likeable.
The action is fast and unrelenting.
VERDICT
"9 Dragons" is masterfully written and thoroughly entertaining.
Bosch gets played November 25, 2009 John Bowes (Oxford, MA USA) For a while this one is a variation on "Taken", good action and suspenseful. But Harry makes mistakes he usually doesn't (flashes a roll of money), and people die. And grumpy and short fused with his co-workers to a disturbing degree. But it is the ending that confounds this reader. Guilt piled on Harry and others. A problem that he will have to deal with for a while. We are introduced to a character and at the end have a whole new batch of info that changes our opinion completely.
