Product Description

LEADERSHIP IS AN ART has long been a must-read not only within the business community but also in professions ranging from academia to medical practices, to the political arena. First published in 1989, the book has sold more than 800,000 copies in hardcover and paperback. This revised edition brings Max De Pree’s timeless words and practical philosophy to a new generation of readers.De Pree looks at leadership as a kind of stewardship, stressing the importance of building relationships, initiating ideas, and creating a lasting value system within an organization. Rather than focusing on the “hows” of corporate life, he explains the “whys.” He shows that the first responsibility of a leader is to define reality and the last is to say thank you. Along the way, the artful leader must: • Stimulate effectiveness by enabling others to reach both their personal potential and their institutional potential • Take a role in developing, expressing, and defending civility and values• Nurture new leaders and ensure the continuation of the corporate cultureLEADERSHIP IS AN ART offers a proven design for achieving success by developing the generous spirit within all of us. Now more than ever, it provides the insights and guidelines leaders in every field need.

5 out of 5 stars Superb description of the art of leadership   August 22, 2009
rowley32256 (Jacksonville USA)
Max DePree was the Chairman of the Board of furniture giant Herman Miller Inc. The book describes the style of management that he used in making Herman Miller one of the most admired companies in the United States. I note from some of the other reviews the perception that DePree's style might be thought of "touchy-feely" and while I know why they might think so, I see it differently. The most effective leaders are not necessarily high-profile, "you're fired!" types; rather they are developers of the potential of their people, whom they truly value. DePree's comment "The signs of outstanding leadership appear primarily among the followers" is quite profound - and quite contrary to the perception created or maintained by that other type of leader.

DePree talks about leaders owing a "covenant" to their organizations and the people that comprise them. He describes leadership as a duty and solemn obligation as opposed to a source of authority.I don't know too many other books on leadership where one would see a sentiment expressed like: Leaders must take a role in developing, expressing and defending civility and values." Other quotes include: "Understand that what we believe precedes policy and practice ... Agree on the rights of work ... Understand the respective role and relationship of contractual agreements and covenants ... Understand that relationships count more than structure." DePree sets out what amount, in effect, to a bill of rights for employees: The Right to be Needed; The Right to be Involved; The Right to a Covenantal Relationship; The Right to Understand; The Right to Affect One's Own Destiny; The Right to be Accountable; The Right to Appeal; and The Right to make a Commitment.

Many management books talk of effective communication. DePree spells out what he believes this entails: Everyone has a right to, and an obligation for, simplicity and clarity in communication. We owe each other truth and courtesy, though truth is sometimes a real constraint, and courtesy inconvenient. If business leaders routinely espoused these principles, not only would they achieve efficiency, but also that elusive quality of integrity. A classic for leaders of all kinds.

5 out of 5 stars Max De Pree is encouraging, thoughtful & inspiring   August 1, 2009
Daniel White (Medina, Ohio United States)
This book discussed topics such as all people have important values, experience, and ideas and should be the owners of their job and place of employment and corporations should respect and honor their different attributes. Other important topics include things such as roving leadership, servant leadership, diversity that goes beyond ethnicity or nationality to the spirit and soul of a person. Lastly, that leadership doesn't seek to control but to liberate. Every person that wants to be an effective and God honoring leader ought to read this book!

5 out of 5 stars The best leadership book ever written   February 22, 2009
John G. Vincent (Florence, SC)
20 year retired Navy Command Master Chief and several more in the exec ranks in corporate America. No finer book on leadership, period. I've read it 500 times over the last 15 years and STILL enjoy it. This is the one when you are reading only one.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid this book   August 27, 2008

"Leadership is an Art" is double-spaced, large type and only 148 pages long and yet it is so thin on content that it still feels like the author is struggling to fill the pages. The five pages of the introduction cover basically everything the author has to say while the rest of the book is filled with redundant anecdotes and pointless religious musing. The few actual points the author does make seem so common sense to me (treat the people who work for you with respect, what a concept) that it actually kind of disturbs me that so many people seem to find his ideas revolutionary.

5 out of 5 stars Learning From The Master   March 7, 2008
Paul Walker (Long Beach)
As CEO Coach, Poet and author of a leadership book that helps leaders learn how to unleash the genius of teams and corporations, I feel this book is a must read. Max is not talking about theories, he is sharing his real experiences from his successful leadership of an excellent company. If you want to learn how to be a leader, this book is core to your collection. I have learned much from this insightful book.
