Amazon.com Review
Claireece Precious Jones endures unimaginable hardships in her young life. Abused by her mother, raped by her father, she grows up poor, angry, illiterate, fat, unloved and generally unnoticed. So what better way to learn about her than through her own, halting dialect. That is the device deployed in the first novel by poet and singer Sapphire. "Sometimes I wish I was not alive," Precious says. "But I don't know how to die. Ain' no plug to pull out. 'N no matter how bad I feel my heart don't stop beating and my eyes open in the morning." An intense story of adversity and the mechanisms to cope with it. Precious is now a major motion picture based on the novel Push by Sapphire, starring Gabourey 'Gabby' Sidibe, Mo'Nique, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey, and Lenny Kravitz. Product Description Relentless, remorseless, and inspirational, this "horrific, hope-filled story" (Newsday) is certain to haunt a generation of readers. Precious Jones, 16 years old and pregnant by her father with her second child, meets a determined and highly radical teacher who takes her on a journey of transformation and redemption.

Brenda's review November 27, 2009 Brenda C. Toscano (Virginia Beach, VA, US) Wonderful book. So well written that you can actually feel yourself in Precious' shoes. Can't wait to see the movie to see how close to the book it actually is.
Startling, Hopeful and Heart wrenching November 24, 2009 A. Mason (VA is for Lovers, USA) This novel is filled with such blatant and graphic detail that some may not be ready for the authors style of story telling. Precious is a testament to the "keep fighting" ideology of life. You feel this poor childs pain as if she were a close friend; and your heart aches wanting to help her. I found myself wishing there was something...anything I could do for her. Her spirit is beautiful and her desire for more, for better had me cheering her on every step of the way.
This is a review of the book, but I must add that the movie and the actors' portayals of the characters was great. The young woman, Ms. Sibide did an AMAZING job, as well as Mo'Nique. This is one of few films based on literature that didn't stray too far away from the book itself, which made me very happy.
fast, harrowing read November 24, 2009 detroitdolly (stone mountain, ga) this book is slender and a fairly quick read. however, the story is harrowing and harsh. one wonders what more can the protagonist reveal in the context of her horrible childhood, and then she lets out another secret. for the most part, the revelations are matter-of-fact and not sensationalized. just a girl wondering why, why, why her life is such as it is. i would not recommend this book for anyone under 15 to read. it is quite graphic with language and sexual situations. this is a good book that actually has a happy ending in that it gives the reader and the character hope, and that's all one can hope for.
Disturbing November 23, 2009 Fuzzy Lizard (Georgia, USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
"Push" was a quick read, but a disturbing one. Heartbreaking.
I felt bad for Precious and wanted her to succeed. In a lot ways she ended up doing so, but she is still going to be scarred for life by what her parents did to her.
This book had a real feel to it in that it is told from Precious' point of view, with grammar and words that she would use.
raw material November 23, 2009 P. Phillips (usa) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
When I heard about this book, I really thought, okay this might be good reading material. I must say if you can get through the first chapter you are doing good. I'm not much on the language and blunt words that are suppose to be written about a 12 year old girl. It may be a good book, but after the third chapter I had to put it away. I have a 13 year old and don't want this book around my house due to the explicit language in it.
