Product Description Jeannette Walls's The Glass Castle was "nothing short of spectacular" (Entertainment Weekly). Now she brings us the story of her grandmother -- told in a voice so authentic and compelling that the book is destined to become an instant classic. "Those old cows knew trouble was coming before we did." So begins the story of Lily Casey Smith, in Jeannette Walls's magnificent, true-life novel based on her no-nonsense, resourceful, hard working, and spectacularly compelling grandmother. By age six, Lily was helping her father break horses. At fifteen, she left home to teach in a frontier town -- riding five hundred miles on her pony, all alone, to get to her job. She learned to drive a car ("I loved cars even more than I loved horses. They didn't need to be fed if they weren't working, and they didn't leave big piles of manure all over the place") and fly a plane, and, with her husband, ran a vast ranch in Arizona. She raised two children, one of whom is Jeannette's memorable mother, Rosemary Smith Walls, unforgettably portrayed in The Glass Castle. Lily survived tornadoes, droughts, floods, the Great Depression, and the most heartbreaking personal tragedy. She bristled at prejudice of all kinds -- against women, Native Americans, and anyone else who didn't fit the mold. Half Broke Horses is Laura Ingalls Wilder for adults, as riveting and dramatic as Isak Dinesen's Out of Africa or Beryl Markham's West with the Night. It will transfix readers everywhere.

Loved it November 27, 2009 Tombstone Jo (Albuquerque, NM) Also a fan of The Glass Castle. This main character is a character. Love the story, which I have thought about after the book is done.
Understanding Jeannette Walls November 27, 2009 Joyce L. Chesshir (California) Bought this audio book for my aging Mother. We had read the Glass Castle together ( I read, she listened). This was so interesting and certainly revealing. Jeannette was the voice of her amazing Grandmother. A spirited young daughter of a brilliant but handicapped father expanding to the beginning of her Grandaughter's talented life. Through all of Grandma Lil's adventures that covered the history of the west brought new understanding of the time, the arid territories and the lives of three unforgetable women. Couldn't decide who was had the most remarkable life, Grandma Lil, Mom Rosemary or Jeannette who recorded it all. The book was so inspirational it makes me want to research the backgrounds of the women in my family. I am sure there is a story for all of us and I would hope Jeannette could write it.
Just as good November 23, 2009 Jeffrey R. Terrell 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have not finished this book yet, but already like it as much as Glass Castle.

I LOVED this book and could not put it down. The writing style is very different from Walls' 'The Glass Castle' but at the same time fits the need and narrative of the subject matter in this novel. I think Walls nailed it by writing in the voice of Libby and it gives insight to Rosemary and Rex and many of their actions in 'Castle'. I would highly recommend this book. A quick read, but it left me wanting to know more.
A great book November 21, 2009 Ruth A. Jacobs (Dierks, Ar USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I loved "The Glass Castle" and was looking forward to another book by Jeannette Walls. This one is about her grandmother and gives an insight into her mother's unique personality. The book is a quick read and I like the short chapters for reading at bedtime!
I loaned "The Glass Castle" to a friend and she like it so much she ordered copies for her family for Christmas.
