Product Description This manual presents the first empirically studied, integrative treatment approach developed specifically for PTSD and substance abuse. For persons with this prevalent and difficult-to-treat dual diagnosis, the most urgent clinical need is to establish safety--to work toward discontinuing substance use, letting go of dangerous relationships, and gaining control over such extreme symptoms as dissociation and self-harm. The manual is divided into 25 specific units or topics, addressing a range of different cognitive, behavioral, and interpersonal domains. Each topic provides highly practical tools and techniques to engage patients in treatment; teach "safe coping skills" that apply to both disorders; and restore ideals that have been lost, including respect, care, protection, and healing. Structured yet flexible, topics can be conducted in any order and in a range of different formats and settings. The volume is designed for maximum ease of use with a large format, lay-flat binding, and helpful reproducible therapist sheets and handouts.

purchase for mom November 22, 2009 J. Buress (USA) this was a purchase for mom that is a drug and alcohol counselor. she needed another copy of this book. she was pleased with how fast we received the book once it was purchased.
Seeking Safety: A treatment Manual for PTSD and Substance Abuse. September 20, 2008 D. Clements (Baltimore, MD) I am finding this manual very useful in working with clients who suffer with PTSD and Substance Abuse. The handouts are helpful and appropriate, and my client's are responding positively to this treatment approach. The activities quickly help them recognize how the two disorders are inter-related and that they need to address both issues simultaneously in order to find their road to recovery.
Gold Standard in dual diagnosis treatment of PTSD June 25, 2008 Grillsgt47 (Texas) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This manual is in use and recommended for use by the VA's National Center for PTSD at Palo Alto California.
Great Program May 20, 2008 Darryl Evey (Apple Valley, CA) This manual clearly maps out a program for trauma victims struggling with Substance Abuse. Most programs are designed for one or the other. This manual clearly describes a program that integrates approaches to both issues. There is very little fluff (stories and experiences) with only important valuable information included. It is easy to read and not written as a term paper with lots of footnotes and references.
A useful and inspiring resource April 8, 2005 S. Luftig (New York, NY) 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
This book, intended for therapists, is a comprehensive, compassionate, and accessible guide to what Najavits establishes is the first crucial step for someone struggling with PTSD and substance abuse: learning to feel safe. It is also an excellent resource for patients who want to help themselves. What I like best is that the book is filled with checklists, stories, exercises, and quotations such that I can open to nearly any page and find ideas that are both practical and inspirational. In short, this is a great book.
