4 out of 5 stars Decent starter hoop system   July 6, 2009
Maverick
Bought this for my 13 year old son, who wanted a hoop in our yard.
The whole system was definitely really hefty and trying to install it with my 13 year old son was definitely not a good idea. It took me and another tall strong individual to help put it together. Instructions were actually quite good, in contrast to what some reviewers thought it was... it does take some know how and being handy with using construction instructions... The only issue with the whole building of the hoop system was not the instructions, but rather the heft of it, and also the fitting of the bolts and screws... better quality control would be good...
Overall, it took about 2 hours to put it all together... The backboard was pretty solid for the price of the unit... Once filled with water, the unit was quite stable...

could be better, but for the price, it is pretty decent...

5 out of 5 stars Great value for the price   June 15, 2009

I do not know why there are so many complaints about the setup. I have to agree with E.E Naya, this was not that hard to put together and the instructions although not great, were good enough for a person with basic reading comprehension skills. I agree that it may be a bit odd to "bounce" the sections of the pole together but if you follow the instructions it was actually very effective. In my opinion the most difficult part was lining up the top/middle/bottom sections the right way, because if you mess that up and need to pull them apart I could see that being next to impossible. All you need to do is align the stickers that are labeled Top/Medium/Bottom on the same side and you are good to go...the instructions could have been a little bit more detailed on this part but all I did was look ahead a few steps and see where the holes were used in the following steps and then it was clear as day. Once the 3 pole sections were aligned and "bounced" together the rest was a walk in the park.

It should take 2 able bodied, sober adults no longer then 3 hours to go from box to pick-up game. AFA the unit itself, the base is a little cheap, but the rest was higher quality then I expected for $339. The backboard has good bounce on it and the break away rim was much higher quality then I expected. Can easily withstand me dunking on it (at 7.5 feet of course) with not ill effects. Great first hoop for my 6 and 8 year olds and the occasional pick-up game in the driveway. I would highly recommend this hoop for the money.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to put together -- REALLY!!! That is if you have half a brain.   May 8, 2009

FIRST let me say... I usually don't write/send in reviews - but, after reading a few negative reviews by some that purchased this system, I was driven to send in my own experience...which questions how anyone could send in a negative review on this product...In other words, I just don't understand how they could have had a negative experience??? (Keeping in mind, that when you buy this product...you need to know that you'll need to put this thing together...with a few bolts, screws and nuts (no pun intended) - it's not a out of the box fold open and ready to go product...it's a some assembly required product.)
Please Read On...

Here's my story...I received my hoop yesterday via UPS...it came in one large box. My wife called me at work to give me the heads-up (as she wanted me to put it together before my son's bday, which was only two days away.) With only two days to put together the unit...she was a little concerned, as she had read a couple of the negative reviews left by others (which after building the unit myself -- based on their feedback, I can say -- they must have been incompetent -- and I say this in a nice way -- as I just don't understand why they could have run into any issues.) Regardless, my wife being like most...was more interested in the negative reviews then the positive ones (e.g., difficult to construct, took 8 hours to build, etc, etc, etc...) I assured my wife that I'm good at reading directions and putting things together (e.g., BBQ Grill, Bike, Bed Frame, etc...) so I was not overly concerned with the negative reviews and figured I was up to the task. I got home by 5:00 and started into the project...ready for the worst.

All-said and done, it was EASY-EASY-EASY to build. It took me and my son (8 turning 9 in two days) just over 2 hours to put together. To give you and idea of how easy it was...the hardest thing to do was getting the net connected to the hoop. Everything else was as easy as pie. Putting the poll together was easy (a little heavy - but easy), bolting items together was easy (two people makes it easier to do...but one can still do it alone, if necessary). Connecting the back board to the frame was easy. And believe me when I tell you that I'm no rocket scientist. I'm just a regular guy that can read directions...I have the tools recommended...I set myself up in my garage, laid out all the parts before I started...and then went to work. After reading the negative reviews, I was expecting it to be difficult and time consuming.

I truly don't understand what their problems were...other then they have problems (if you get my drift). The directions are well written. The parts are well labeled. I just don't get what their problem in building this unit was...other then they can not read directions properly, or they are not (just a little bit) mechanically inclined.

After two hours of (having fun with my son) building the hoop...we where playing a little one-on-one in the driveway with an outstanding, well constructed, easy to use, good quality basketball hoop.

I would recommend this system to my friends and anyone else looking for a reasonably priced, easy to build, good quality portable basketball hoop.

It's a great buy. I would say good luck...but you will not need it...it's that good and easy:)

1 out of 5 stars Same nightmare as the others   March 20, 2009

I have same experience as others, specifically as J.J.Rise's situation. It is couple of inches in and could not pull out to remove the paint. Really bad design.

1 out of 5 stars Same nightmare as Michelle Sims reports   March 11, 2008

I am having the same experience as previous poster Michelle Sims with the Spalding NBA 68395 Portable Basketball Hoop. In my case the parts for the wheel assembly were of poor quality and broke. These are the same wheel assemblies you find on many toys and this was terrible quality.
The three pieces of metal pole will not fit together. I have tried just about every type of force and there are still 3" or more that the poles need to move inside one another. Now with some small progress it seems impossible to back them out to try removing paint as Michelle Sims mentioned. The backboard also looks junky at the corners with glue visible. I bought what I thought was the best one but it was a terrible, awful buy.
