Amazon.com Product Description
Combining stylish looks with heart rate monitoring features, this larger Timex Personal Heart Rate Monitor watch (model T5G971) can be worn by both men and women. It features a chest strap heart rate monitor, easily accessible function buttons, durable resin case, and comfortable resin strap with a stylish tapered profile. For integrating heart rate monitoring into your training, this watch enables you to continuously track your heart rate during exercise as well as pre-set target heart rate zones with alarms that notify you when you are out of the zone. It also offers an automatic activity timer and a workout review that recalls activity time and average/peak heart rates. This streamlined watch also has a month/day/date display with 12/24-hour time.

The Indiglo night-light uniformly lights the surface of the watch dial using patented blue electroluminescent lighting technology. It uses less battery power than most other watch illumination systems, enabling your watch battery to last longer. The watch is water resistant to 30 meters (100 feet), which protects it from rain and water splashes. All Timex heart rate monitor sensors have batteries that can be replaced by consumers without requiring them to be returned to the manufacturer.

4 out of 5 stars Works As Advertised   November 7, 2009

Timex is a name I've trusted for 30 years and here is yet another wonderful product well worth the price. Its user friendly interface is straight forward and logical. The display is clear and with a dedicated back light orange button. Tho the main indicators are large, the smaller display items could be larger. All and all, the Timex T5G971 Unisex Sports Personal Heart Rate Monitor Watch is easy to love and depend on. I recommend it as one of the best in its price range.

5 out of 5 stars Great product, here are the cons   November 4, 2009
Philip Dhingra (Austin, TX)
I'm not going to waste your time glowing over the pluses of this product. Rather, I'll go through the negatives that you see in the reviews here, and tell you whether you need to worry about them.

- Yes, the instruction and configuration is a little convoluted. But that really doesn't matter. If you're a power user, you'll have the patience to work through it. If you're a casual user (me) you just have to hit the on/off button and you're good to go.

- The chest strap is generally very good. What's great is it has a faint audible beep on the strap itself for every heart beep. So if the rhythm sounds right, then you know it's properly detecting heart beats. To get it working, usually I just wet my finger then wipe it on the strap once-over. The key is to then work up a light sweat. Once that happens, you shouldn't have to fuss with it anymore. It does need moderate moisture to start, but then only light moisture to keep it going. I tried, for example, wearing it before driving to the gym, but then my chest surface dried up, and the monitor lost pace. So I went to the restroom, moisturized it a little, then did some light cardio to get a light sweat worked up, then it was good to go. Either way, this is not a problem. You may just have to fiddle with it for the first couple times you try it. After that, you'll have a routine that's good.

5 out of 5 stars Great motivation tool   November 3, 2009

My first HRM. It works well, and keeps me motivated during my workouts to stay within my HR zone.
Recommended to anyone that runs or goes to the gym. Your workout pace will be measurable.
I like that you can change the batteries yourself when needed.

4 out of 5 stars Best value heart monitor out there   November 3, 2009
Ronnie Smith (charlotte)
This is my first HRM. After researching for a while I figured out that POLAR is not for me ( just not worth the hassle of shipping the watch to get the batteries replaced ). I have considered one other competion OMRON HC100 which seems to be OK but does not give the average heart rate, peak heart rate etc.. ( according to other reviews). I also checked walmart which was selling a similar HRM but you have to touch the watch to get it to display the heart rate ( yuck !!!).Finally decided to go for T5971 as it offered a simple, functional, a no-nonsense way to check the heart rate during the exercise.

There are a couple of CONS to this HRM. You have to wet the sensor straps for the watch to pick up the signal from transmitter, the amount of calories burned shows up more than the actual calories burned. My elliptical machine was showing 441 calories burned for a 30 min workout but this guy was showing over 540 calories. The first glitch is common to all HRMs I guess.

Finally for the price I paid, I really think this is the BEST VALUE Heart Monitor available out there.

Enjoy your workouts

I bought this for my husband almost 3 weeks ago. He just wanted to use it when he went walking. After 3 weeks, he still hasn't been able to figure our how to adjust it to show his heart rate. He is 69.
