4 out of 5 stars Seems great!   November 15, 2009

I've had this product for about a week now and I'm very happy happy with it.

I bought it mainly because it is much cheaper than comparable products from B&D or Dremel and it hasn't let me down. Works great for stripping paint and using heatshrink on computer power supply cables.

1 out of 5 stars two shipments were defective.   September 16, 2009

the first unit arrived and the heat indicator lamps did not come on.

on first use of the replacement unit, after about ten minutes the fan stopped. the heat was set to fairly high and did not go off. some smoke. i assume there is a safety thermostat that would have kicked in, but without the fan the coils glowed for a while.

it may be a bad batch - but there seems to be no quality control at all.

4 out of 5 stars Great for the money   September 14, 2009

I bought the heat gun for one job only, reflowing solder. I'm sure I will have other uses for it in the future. It works just fine and I don't have any real complaints. The price is right and I feel satisfied that I got what I paid for... no more... no less. I would have liked better documentation and I still have no clue what most of the attachments are for. Some typical applications would have been useful. Also, the LED indicators serve no real purpose. They don't exactly correspond to the temperature dial in the back and the product would have been just as good without them. It seems like they threw them in there for marketing purposes and not for functionality. The dial in the back is what I look at to figure out what temperature I'm set for.

If you need a heat gun that has accurate temperature readouts, this is not the one for you. Look for one with a LCD (liquid crystal display), not LEDs (light emitting diode). If you are like me, you don't care for extremely accurate temperature readings and don't want to pay a lot, then I would recommend this item for you.

I hope that helps!

4 out of 5 stars Did the job nicely   June 12, 2009

The first job I used this on was in relation to multiple replacement of magnetic window sensors in my house's burglar alarm system. The solder work, and then the shrinking of insulating heat shrink around the connection was, of necessity, done in very close proximity to the window glass and frame. Through the use of the window protection attachment this was successfully achieved without damage to the glass or frame. The gun is extremely powerful, and I envisage using it for many other tasks over the coming years (I hope!). I particularly liked being able to easily stand the gun on its end. The only negative that I found was the operation of the slide trigger to operate the gun. I found that to be a little awkward - hopefully I will become accustomed to it as I use the gun more. Overall good value for money - I'm pleased with the package.
