Product Description To achieve a surgically sharp edge on your tools, nothing works faster or better than Japanese Water Stones. The abrasive slurry produced on top of the stone cuts aggressively and polishes the blade as it sharpens. If you've never tried sharpening with water stones before, you'll be astounded by the results.

Good performance and reasonably priced November 20, 2009 Richard Wong (Ewing, NJ United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I will give a short description of waterstones for people who are new to them. Japanese waterstones are known for its unique performance. Water is essential for the sharpening performance of these stones, thus their names. They are quick to work with. You can sharpen your knives and tools with fewer passes through a Japanese stones than many other stones. This is because waterstones are made with small abrasive particles which are loosely held together. During sharpening, the surface particles easily come loose and revealing new layer of particles for fast and consistent sharpening. The loose particles are then carried away by the surrounding water and form a slurry which also assists the sharpening process. Another advantage of Japanese waterstones is that they come in many different grit sizes. The disadvantages of waterstones are that the stones wear out fast and the slurry can be messy.
I bought this stone for $30 and I thought it was expensive, and it is expensive compared to typical oil stones which only cost $3-10. However, a waterstone grinds faster and is more uniform than those inexpensive stones. In other words, you spend shorter amount of time and less energy to grind your knives and the resulting ground edge is more polished. I had to press my knives hard against those inexpensive stones to sharp my knives, but I only need to apply a very small amount of force on this waterstone -- almost all of my force is applied pushing my knives back and forth and not downward. So, yes, this waterstone is more expensive than many oil stones, but it delivers higher performance than the cheaper stones and this particular waterstone is cheaper than many other Japanese waterstones.
This combination 1000 + 6000 grit Japanese waterstone is 2" wide, 8" long and 1" deep. It is a good option for beginners and for amateurs simply because it is cheaper to buy one combination stone than two separate individual stones. That being said, if you are serious about sharpening, then it is better to buy individual stones, which I will do in the future. As mentioned earlier, a waterstone works fast because it constantly reveals new grinding surfaces. This also means it wears out fast and you will need to keep its surface flat by lapping the stone frequently. Usually, I only need to lap the stone once per knife, unless I am doing a double bevel edge (compound bevel), then I may do one when I switch the angle. I recommend getting a diamond stone for lapping, like this: DMT W6FP 6-Inch Diamond Tabletop Whetstone, Fine Grit or DMT W6CP 6" Diamond Whetstone Sharpener - Coarse With Plastic Box. A diamond stone not only can work as a lapping stone, but it can function as a coarse sharpening stone as well. With a diamond stone and this combination water stone, you essentially have a coarse, medium, fine grit sharpening system, which is not bad for $60-70.
I have one minor criticism. I wish the 1000 and the 6000 grit surfaces are not equally thick. Because the 1000 grit surface will wear out much faster than the 6000 grit surface, it would have been nice if the 1000 grit surface is 2 times thicker than the 6000 grit surface. That being said, this is a not criticism against this particular combination stone, as almost all combination stones are like this.
In conclusion, this is a good combination stone and it is not a good starting point for beginners and non-professionals.
one of the best October 24, 2009 Igor Grigoriev (boston,ma) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
it will make your knife razor sharp. Just the tool for good knife, two sides: one for sharpening, one for polishing or honing. Keep in mind that the stone is fine an very very fine, so if you have dull knife then get rough stone (300), with that one it will take you forever to finish the job. from other side my knifes need just small touch. now my Katana sharpened as new, LIKE NEW!!!
Works well for my application September 12, 2009 A. Pun (North Carolina, United States) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Overall, I feel that this waterstone serves adequate function for my needs of obtaining a fine edge on blades.
works perfectly for this novice June 13, 2009 Gary W. Provencher (california) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am extremely happy with the product. I am a complete novice at sharpening knives manually and this put a very keen edge on my crappy Henkel (not 4 star or Pro-S, just the stamped steel) knives in a very little while. I did not use a honing guide, I did it manually, so the knives arent "stupid sharp" but that is due to the operator. Watch the videos on you-tube to see how the experts do it. I did buy this packaged with the stone holder, and it really worked well in keeping the work from sliding around on the counter top. Overall an excellent product. I need to buy a strop and a diamond plate to reset the stone surface, but that is another story...

This is just what my husband wanted. It works well, and is very durable.
The company is really great too, we had to re-route the package and without there help and patience with me it would have never happened. Thank you for the great service.
