Larson Honing guide November 17, 2009 R D. Huey (Buford, GA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The guide seems to be well made, but does not accomodate the edge profiles of my chisels, hence the chisels wobble during honing. I plan to take the guide with me to the home center to purchase a new set of chisels that are held firmly. I need a new set anyway, but I'll have to admit that I was unhappy with this product. I don't know how one would tell if this guide fit your chisels without just trying it on the chisels to be sharpened.
Not great for Chisels October 26, 2009 Joseph A. Hala 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have a hard time keeping a constant angle on my chisels when sharpening by hand and thought this would solve my problem and it was a fairly decent price considering some other guides on the market.
The Good: Other than the price, the guide accomodates both plane knives and chisels. Smooth adjustment screw.
The Not-so-good: My chisels have a tapered thickness from the tip to the handle but the guide does not take that into account, leaving you with a wobbly surface to try to tighten. It took some time to position chisels correctly, then torque down with a screwdriver. After several shifts in the blade while sharpening, I got frustrated and took the thing apart for some modifications. I punched out the rail guides and used a grinder and file to make a tapered groove in the guide. It took a couple trial-and-error mods to get the guide to properly grab onto a chisel. I would never try this on a more expensive guide but I had no qualms doing it on this tool.
Perhaps I just got a bad copy. I didn't bother returning it because I was able to get some use out of it. I needed no adjustments for plane blades.
Overall: 2-Stars, you get what you pay for. Want precision? get the Veritas Mk II
it's just a guide. June 12, 2009 P. Smith (Las Vegas, NV, USA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
simple and easy. doesn't come with instructions but it you are playing with sharp objects, you better be able to figure it out.LOL. works better with longer chisels but worked with a 2" with the guide right below the handle. I like it.
I gave it a three June 7, 2009 Cornytheclown (sitting at my desk) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I saw all the reviews on this tool...and being an optimist I trusted the better reviews....
I screwed up....lol
I guess its an alright honing guide for someone who just casually needs to home a chisel to a sharp edge. I wouldnt put anything I value in it though..
I tried sharpening an older craftsman chisel that I beat on and while it did sharpen it....and got it sharp....It was a pain to get it to the correct bevel in the jig..and the chisel was hard to get in there staright.
I actually built a jig years ago....out of all thread rod a hard rubber roller and some nuts and bolts....and I trusted it to keep the bevel square.... something I wouldnt trust this thing to do..... enough sharpenings with this and you are going to end up with a skew chisel....lol
Not that bad...really....
Like I said...homeowners...occasional wood butchers....carpenters.....it will do a fine job.
Serious woodworkers.....learn to hone by hand like the guys a hundred years ago did or invest in a better jig.
I will use this on my beater chisels....because it is faster than honing using your hands and fingers to maintain the bevel....and I have not tried it on a plane blade yet....although I am thinking of yanking the blade out of an old millers falls "beater" I have laying around.
But I wont use it on any of my fine chisels.....Id rather just take my time and hone them by hand....takes longer but its also less likely to end up with a screwed up bevel or out of square chisel.
Horrible April 20, 2009 Alexander Malkin (Boston) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The roller is not sitting tight. This causes excessive grinding on left and right sides of the plane iron.
The guide doesn't hold the iron in 90 degree position.
Can't hold the irons for rabbit planes ( which are narrow top and wide bottom ).
I tossed in the garbage and used my old Stanley guide ( I got the Larson's guide after reading some reviews in the books for this type of guide ).
Big mistake, especially I couldn't return it ( the return window expired ).
