Nice drill - avoid the batteries November 25, 2009 HP 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Unfortunately I did not read about the problems with the Makita BL1815 (1.5Ah) battery. I wish I had.
This drill kit gets two stars instead of 5 on account of the batteries. The kit comes with two 1.5 Ah batteries, and a promotional offer meant that Amazon threw in one extra for free.
One of the three did not even charge once. The charger indicates that the battery is bad and refuses to charge it. I opened it up and all the cells measure fine. The charge fuse turned out to be blown so I replaced it, but it still won't charge.
I'm now waiting for the next one to die...
How a quality company like Makita dares to dirty its good name with such poor quality is beyond me.
I LOVE my Makita!!! November 23, 2009 Maida 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First off, I'm a girly girl, and for any ladies out there looking to buy your first drill, this is it.
I've gone thru about 4 cordless drills in the last 10 years.. My dad had picked all of them--cheap, and usually between 9-14 volts because we both figured I wasn't really needing it for any "construction" type of stuff--just the little stuff around the dorm, apt and later the house or putting together ikea furniture. But after I crunched the numbers, and added up the time i've spend frustrated at either how little power it had and how much force I had to use, or how heavy the thing was, and how it could never hold a charge long enough for me to finish a project. Now that I have a house I decided to just spent the $200 and buy a good one to begin with.
So I bought this one about a year ago and it was money well spent.
It's light weight, has a bright LED light that comes in very handy, has a lot of power on the 1st gear > alone so I don't need to throw my body weight on it to drill--and when I need the extra power I just kick it into 2 on the top. It charges quick, and comes with a 2nd battery--not that you would need it, thanks to a lithium-ion battery, the charge lasts FOREVER! Did I mention the battery made the drill light weight-- no longer do I have to stop in the middle of a project because I can't feel my arm. I use it for just about everything around the house. I love the clutch thingy, it keeps me from stripping screws and over tightening stuff. For the first couple of times just follow the guidelines on the instruction manual for the settings and it works every time. The only drawback is that it doesn't have a level built in like my old craftsman drill. Being short and trying to drill in high awkward spots makes it hard for me to gauge the correct angle so the level would come in handy. The handle is small enough that I can actually grip it all the way around, and it feels comfy on my hand so I can work for a long time with out my hands cramping up.
Like a good high quality brand of makeup & brushes lets you blend and create the most amazing looks--this drill will actually make you want to build/fix stuff with it. In fact, I love it so much, that I have started buying other tools and turning my garage into a workshop instead of a storage room. I can't wait to learn more about woodworking and home repairs. It makes me feel so empowered to know that I can build something or fix something by myself without having to bribe, beg, or pay a guy to do it for me. I finally understand why guys can love their tools so much.
(Plus it makes me look pretty sexy when its hanging off my hip lol)
so-so November 18, 2009 Dusty (Princeton, nj United States) Cute drill- nice and light, good power & ergo.. However, the 18v, 1.5ah battery doesn't do as much work as a 14.4v, 2ah battery and the plastic battery retention foot may crack if dropped { 3ft! }. Bulky charger, also. The kit w/ the impact driver is actually hard to pack. Maybe I should have purchased the pro model, but I didn't want the weight penalty.
Great drill but worthless with the included batteries November 4, 2009 L. M. Riggins 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The BL-1815 batteries that come with this drill fail often and are expensive to replace. Check out the reviews here on Amazon on the battery.
Good size/power; bad chuck. October 31, 2009 Akamai22 (Seattle, WA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this set to use in a kitchen replacement project. I first read all the Amazon reviews and determined that I wouldn't leave the batteries on the charger for longer than 30 minutes, so in my brief ownership time the batteries have been fine.
PROS:
Excellent torque
Battery recharge really does take 15 minutes.... I LOVE this.
LED light is a must-have once you use it.
Compact size really helps with tight spaces.
Kit with 2 batteries and charger is good value.
CONS:
No driver bit included.... what a weird place to cut corners.
The chuck became unusable (see below).
As noted above I was relying on this driver/drill for a big project. When I first started using it I thought the chuck was stiff when installing/removing a bit. Over a 2-day period of use (one full battery charge) it became unusable. Now I'm a big guy and I've used keyless chucks for many years without trouble, and this was a real first.....I couldn't get the check open. I finally resorted to holding the chuck with big Channel-lock pliers and running the driver in reverse to loosen the chuck. This can't be good. I've tried oiling the inner working of the chuck, but this is just unacceptable quality control.
