Customer Reviews:
3 out of 5 stars Works fine, but what's the use?   November 9, 2009

The product itself works just fine. The problem is what to do with the information it gives you. When you live in a wet climate, it's almost always on alert. So what can you do about it?

It's not a problem with this particular product, just with the idea in general. There might be better ways to spend your money if you already know you have a problem.

4 out of 5 stars Good, inexpensive dew point monitor   September 19, 2009

This product is advertised as a mold alarm. That's misleading. It neither measures mold growth nor displays any sort of spore count. The manufacturer's idea is that, above 65%, there's an increased risk of mold growth. So it flashes a little backlit frowny-face icon to let you know when the rh is above 65%. That idea is very common, but pretty weak as a consumer-appropriate risk signal. It's the rh *at the surface* that governs mold risk... not the rh measured in the middle of a room in the open air. If any sensor could measure rh in the first millimeter of air next to the potentially moldy surfaces, it would be a relevant indicator of mold risk. This device sits on a desk or table.

On the other hand, this sensor measures and display air temperature and rh...AND... it converts those values to dew point and displays that value as well. That's a pretty big deal.

It's the lowest-cost dew point display that I'm aware of. Other instruments which have this function cost well over $100, and they are hard to find. This little gem displays t/rh/Td clearly, for a very economical price. Even more surprising, in the range of interest for homeowners (between 20F and 70°F dewpoints), the instrument correlates very closely with instruments costing far more (over $300.00). This device responds very slowly, but that's to be expected. If you can wait for a few minutes after any change in the air temperature or dew point, you get a surprisingly accurate reading.

Plus, if you understand that *high dew points* really are the issue for mold risk, then in a very indirect way, the instrument could be called a mold risk alert. It's just that the risk level should be set as maximum dew points, not maximum rh. (Probably at 65°F dew point for air conditioned buildings, and at 40°F dew point in heated buildings... but it all depends on the building and the climate, and many other factors)

All-in-all, a very nice little dew point sensor, for a very economical price.

5 out of 5 stars Works as Promised   September 15, 2009

I was worried about buying a brand that I had never heard of, but the description and price were good. I have not been disappointed. This device works as advertised. It is much, much easier to prevent mold than to remove it. This device makes that easier to do. I move it around the basement rooms to check each area. I use it to monitor the performance of my humidifier. My built-in humidifier was not working right, and this device alerted me to the problem. I have had it for a month or two and have not had to replace the batteries yet. Bottom line - works as advertised and very handy to have.

5 out of 5 stars Accurate tool   April 29, 2009

This does what it says. It has been a wonderful tool especially after I had a ceiling leak and monitoring the moisture level was critical for a number of reasons.
