Let's face it. Most vacuums just don't cut it when it comes to really cleaning a home or office. Pesky pet hair embeds deeper in carpet than traditional vacuums go; bits and pieces of tracked-in dirt and debris hunker down under floor trim just out of reach of the latest brush innovations, rendering us to the silliness of handpicking behind that expensive vacuum, filling our pockets with lint, and wondering--who's really the boss? Troubles like these made the folks at Eureka get down and dirty and, ultimately, design the Boss Smart-Vac Upright Vacuum. Offering powerful performance for everyday household cleaning, the Eureka Boss is the solution for people who insist on having a truly clean home. The Boss's Direct Air Control System features an air selector switch that lets you direct all suction either deep into the carpet or to the hose for easy above-the-floor cleaning. The Power Paw brush makes it easy to clean stairs and upholstery, and even claws up embedded pet hair, so Fido can spend more time inside. The motorized brush lets you go from carpet to bare-floor cleaning with the flick of a switch. The Boss Smart-Vac is powered by a beefy, 12-amp motor that provides plenty of suction power for deep-cleaning carpets, and leaves nothing behind on hard floors.

Pretty smart, right? Well, here's the really smart part. The Boss Smart-Vac isn't just the best household carpet- and floor-cleaning vacuum on the market; it's also equipped with a unique, sealed, HEPA filtration system that captures 99.97 percent of dust, pollen, allergens, and bacteria. So, vacuuming the house doesn't mean you have to dust afterward, or sneeze while you're doing it. Cleaner carpets and cleaner indoor air at the same time!

Plus, the Boss comes loaded with user-friendly features to take the frustration out of vacuuming. A wide 15-inch cleaning path covers a lot of ground quickly before company comes. In addition, the exclusive dust trap system captures debris and dust in three stages. A handy stretch hose extends to five times its original length for reaching around furniture and sucking the cobwebs off the ceiling. And, a 30-foot cord won't leave you coming up short. The bare floor brush is designed to smoothly glide across wood and tile floors while picking up more dust and debris in corners and along baseboards than any other model. One extra Type-R belt and one bonus bag come included. The vacuum cleaner measures 12 by 15 by 44 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty. --Brian Olson

4 out of 5 stars Great vacuum cleaner for the price   November 27, 2009
Bronzini's Mom
bought this as a replacement for an earlier Eureka model that died due to a scarf being sucked into it (long story...). I again did my research on the internet and check various websites to determine the best bagged vacuum cleaners. Again the Eureka was on the list and the price was low. Got it in 2 days from Amazon and boy I was even more please with the upgraded model and it makes my carpet look brandy new and gets up all the embeded dirt. Nap on carpet looks refreshed and the suction power is also fabulous. Can't go wrong with this product or the pricing. I have previously owner the Hoover windtunnel cleaners and frankly they are way too loud and didn't do as nice a job as the Eureka.

2 out of 5 stars Had To Replace Hose After Only Light Use   November 26, 2009

I am disgusted with this this vacuum and especially Eureka - buy Eureka at your own risk. I had problems with the hose almost immediately after only light usage. The plastic end tip of the hose started to chip away as if it was made of thin glass. And even worse, the hose tore where it attaches to plastic end-wand. By the time I got around to calling Eureka, my warranty had expired so they told me to go pound sand (even though this is a serious design problem).

Another problem I have experienced is, on occasion, when I turn the vac on, a huge dirt cloud is spewed from the vac (even though there are no obstructions, and the bag is fresh and properly installed). I'm not sure, but it may have been because I had accidentally had the hose/floor setting on "hose" and the brush setting on "floor". Nevertheless, this is probably a common oversight and it shouldn't cause dirt to be spewed throughout your whole house (kind of defeats the purpose of having a vacuum).

I did a duct tape repair on the hose which worked for a while, but eventually had to fork over a bunch of money for a new hose.

Unless Eureka has addressed their serious problems with this vac, and you have made the mistake of buying it, I highly recommend reinforcing the hose/wand connection with some duct tape; or you too will soon be buying a new hose.

Another maddening issue is that the hose is way too short; it should be about 3' longer - it will drive you crazy.

I have owned many vacs in the past and have never had problems like these; especially with hoses falling apart.

I will say that the vac does have excellent suction; but that doesn't help you much if your vac blows dirt all over your house and the hoses fall apart.

Eureka owes everyone a refund with interest and an apology for this pile of rubbish that they continue to push on unsuspecting consumers. My rating of two stars was too generous.

5 out of 5 stars great vacuum, great value   November 24, 2009
DrJ (South Bend, IN, USA)
This is a lot of vacuum for not much money. What I like most is the ability to turn off the floor roller-brush: it turns off automatically when the vacuum is upright or when a second switch near the carpet height adjustment is pushed. You gain all the advantage of a canister in an upright, which is easier to maneuver. The vacuum strength is very good. The switch for floor or hose (attachments) is conveniently located near waist-height (the big yellow dial on the right). The machine feels solid but it is not heavy. Although it is not as quiet as some (e.g. Electrolux Oxygen), it is not annoyingly noisy, either (I don't hold conversations or listen to the radio while vacuuming, anyway). The long cord means you are not changing plugs all the time. The clear plastic cover on the roller makes it obvious if the roller-brush is on or off. The HEPA filter means the vented air is very clean. I got a rebuilt, which shipped with minimal packaging (yeah!) and looks fine but is missing the pet-hair/riser attachment (dispensable). Nothing can make vacuuming fun but this makes it not so bad.

4 out of 5 stars started out great, now it's good enough   November 20, 2009
Berenice A. Carstetter (Corpus Christi, TX USA)
The first couple of times I used it on my wooden floors, it was perfect. However, after about 5 uses, it has started to do some kind of suction where it makes it get stuck and I have to kind of pick up the vacuum to reset it. I also don't see the roll on the floor 'rolling' while I'm vacuuming. It only rolls sometimes and I'm not sure if that's normal. But it gets the work done very well. It can be kind of heavy, but nothing out of the ordinary. Easy to handle.
