Decent Pots & Pans October 26, 2009 G-man (Columbus, OH) We've owned a set of these since 2003. They work great when new, but the pots began to pit and gouge over time. We use them frequently -- mostly hand wash and use wood & plastic utensils when cooking. The pans lost much of their anti-stick ability.
The good news... I returned them to the distributor (Metro Kitchen), and they replaced them within a week -- just got them back today. No questions asked! Great customer service! Maybe the new ones have been improved and will last a little longer.
We also just bought a set of the Platinum Cookware, and these are some high-quality and heavy-duty products. Just started using them, and they work nicely. They came with a video on how to fully utilize them.
True nonstick... October 12, 2009 Kutark (Colo Spgs, CO) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ok, so, i've owned quite a lot of pans (mostly calphalon), and have cooked on quite a lot of other brands which I didn't own (all-clad, le creuset, etc). Prior to this pan, the best nonstick i've had was the Calphalon One series. Well, I needed to get my hands on a rather large fry pan in a hurry, and ended up heading to a local cookware shop which had a great many different high end pans for sale. Unfortunately, or fortunalely, depending on how you look at it, they had none of the larger calphalon one series pans in stock. Well, after much perusing I managed to find myself on this gem. I decided to take a risk, knowing nothing about the company and only what the salesman told me (which is to be taken with a grain of salt of course), and I am very pleased with the pan.
I've had it now for about 2.5 years and its been perfect. The finish has held up relatively well, especially considering some of my roommates cooking habits (I told my roomies that it was ok to use metal utensils with, and one of them took that statement a bit too seriously). As for the people who have posted the 1 star reviews saying the pans wear out after a while and become sticky. I can't say i've experienced the same. And this pan is easily, EASILY the most used pan in the household, and I have 3 roomies, all of us guys, all of us who cook regularly. The only thing I can think is that the people are cooking on FAR too high of a setting. With the exception of boiling water, i've never had to cook anything in ANY of my pans, calphalon, etc, at higher than 6/10 on the dial. That or they're using cooking sprays, which were advised against in the first place. Of course, there is always the chance that they simply got a defective set.
Cleaning this pan is so easy it almost seems wrong, almost like you're selling your soul to satan or something in return for easy cleanup. But I don't care what you cook on this pan, it will be clean with no more than 3 passes of the rough side of a dish sponge. I've even had situations where my roomies made horrible sticky messes (think honey glazed salmon, etc), and i found it a day or two later still dirty... bam, whiped right off.
As for the psycho's who are complaining about PTFE, why not do some actual research instead of just assuming that it is somehow going to hurt you. These people are freaking out because if you leave a pan like this on the stove, not cooking anything on it, at a high temperature, for an extended period of time, it can cause the teflon to break down and release fumes which can kill a few exotic species of birds, yes, birds, who have to be extremely close to the pan while this is happening and for an extended period of time. The best part about it, these very same birds, can be killed by the fumes emitted from burnt butter, yes, burnt butter. The compounds on these scanpans and all teflon based nonstick pans you will find in stores have long since been FDA approved safe for human use. So, unless you're a tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy theorist, you shouldn't be even remotely concerned about this whole topic.
On a side note, I would not be surprised even in the slightest to find out the people posting on here about PTFE carcinogens smoke cigarettes. Learn to see the forest from the trees people.
loses its nonstick-ness! September 8, 2009 M. Stern as other reviewers have noted, these pans do not remain non-stick after repeated use. my husband bought me a cookware set years ago, and they were great for a while. i never used metal utensils or put them in the dishwasher (even though they claim it's okay), and after a few years of use food started sticking and the insides of the pots became pitted and impossible to clean. (granted, that seems like a while, but not when you're paying hundreds of dollars for a set). my husband has found a local supplier who says they will replace the pans...we'll see. after what i've read from others, i'm not holding my breath. will post an update after we try the exchange!
Save some money, and just get cast iron August 7, 2009 Thomas P. Morales (Richland, Washington) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought the 12" Scanpan fry pan a number of years ago. As with all miraculous, new-technology "non-stick" pans, this one will eventually break your heart. Over time, its non-stickiness becomes a memory, and you're left with a decent, very heavy, evenly-cooking pan. With that your fate, why pay all that cash?
I've reached a point in my life where I understand that, yes, you need a few non-stick pans in the kitchen and, verily, all non-stick pans have a finite life. I've accepted that. I buy a clutch of reasonably-priced non-stick pans (I'm partial to the Meyer line), use them until they die, and replace them. A more permanent solution is cast iron. They need a bit more TLC to keep them properly seasoned but, hey, they work forever.
Now I'm cookin' June 26, 2009 JSQ98 This is a quality fry pan. I had an older model in the same size that was my favorite workhorse, lasted many years, and never warped. It's the best non-stick because it's a healthier version, works, and cleans up easily. Wash it while it's still slightly warm and it's a breeze! Pricey but worth it.
