Product Description At 10.2 ounces, Kindle is lighter than a typical paperback and as thin as most magazines. Barely a third of an inch in profile, you'll find Kindle fits perfectly in your hands. Kindle is as easy to hold and use as a book. We designed it with long-form reading in mind. When reading for long periods of time, people naturally shift positions and often like to read with one hand. Kindle's page-turning buttons are located on both sides, allowing you to read and turn pages comfortably with one hand from any position. The page-turn buttons now flex inward to prevent any accidental page turns when picking up or handling Kindle. Kindle has a new easy-to-use 5-way controller, enabling precise on-screen navigation for selecting text to highlight or looking up words. Kindle is completely wireless and ready to use right out of the box--no setup, no cables, no computer required. With Kindle's 25% longer battery life, you can read on a single charge for up to 4 days with wireless on. Turn wireless off and read for up to 2 weeks. Battery life will vary based on wireless usage, such as shopping the Kindle Store and downloading content. In low coverage areas or in 1xRTT only coverage, wireless usage will consume battery power more quickly. Whispernet utilizes Amazon's optimized technology plus Sprint's national high-speed (3G) data network to enable you to wirelessly search, discover, and download content on the go. Your books and periodicals are delivered via Whispernet in less than 60 seconds. And unlike WiFi, you never have to hunt for a hotspot.

Very cool reading device November 27, 2009 Michael Traunau (Wels, Austria) The kindle was just what I wanted for reading: an iPod for books. I especially like the wireless feature to buy books whenever and wherever I want without having to turn on my computer. The only thing I would appreciate would be more german books in the store, but I bought it mainly to read english books. I guess other languages will follow sooner or later.
A thing to mention: the kindle now supports PDF files, as of the last update. Very good feature.

Kindle Wireless Reading Device (6" Display, U.S. Wireless)
The device itself is of solid build quality and well engineered.
it's easy as reading paper book and anyone should be able to figure out how to use within mins after taking it out of the box.
I have been using the device for over 5 weeks now and the firmware seems to be solid; not a single freeze or hanging issue and seem very stable.
As for viewing the contents itself the text is very clear and font size is adjustable to your liking. However images and diagrams in books aren't that clear when displayed on device.. and this could probably because of the small screen factor.
The option to download free samples of books, where you can try before you buy is extremely useful. This allows you to download a sample of the book read a few pages from it and then buys it only if you like what you see.
If you are living outside the U.S and are planning to use the Kindle for Newspapers and magazines you might as well forget the whole idea. The international downloads for Newspapers and Magazine contain no images, diagrams of any sort and is pure text and it boring to read. Imagine reading pages and pages of a review of an item that you cannot even see what it is. If you are outside U.S for Newspapers and magazines stick to buying online web editions or hard copies; using the Kindle would be a waste of your month for this.
Great Product! November 27, 2009 Snowbound (Minnesota) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Selected the Kindle over other e-readers due to Amazon's great reputation, lower book prices, and availability. I love it!! Excellent product with a great future. Have had my Kindle 2 Global Edition for 1 week and already received an update from Amazon that extends the battery life and offers native pdf support. Next year they will add folders for better organization of your material through another update -- great support!
Love it! November 27, 2009 V. Pfander 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've had my kindle for about 6 months or so, and I love it. I use it every night to read. Downloads are fast, excellent selection of books. The only thing I wish it had was a backlight. But I clip on a booklight and that works fine.
With Use, Disappointed November 27, 2009 A. Warren 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have had the Kindle 2 for about 6 months and while I was very excited with it initially, I have become disappointed over time. The first thing I noticed was that if you get a book that has maps or charts (like a Civil War book) the zoom feature may or may not work. ( This can be frustrating when the author is describing battles with illustrations and one can not read them.) When I asked about it , Amazon said that some publishers don't provide editions that allow zooming; I thought it was up to Amazon to assure that publishers provided editions that met the advertised standard.
The biggest disappointment has been the difficulty reading the gray on gray text; it didn't bother me at the beginning but over time as I read regular printed books intermingled with Kindle books I realized how much better the black on white text was to read. I read a lot and find that a regular printed book is much easier to read.
Another disappointment is that despite advertising $9.99 prices, with greater frequency I am seeing $14.99 prices. At this price one can acquire a good grade paperback with black on white print for a few dollars more and share it with a friend.
On the positive side , I enjoy having the NY Times at my fingertips wherever I am and the ability to instantly get another book to read if I am traveling. The wireless aspect is definitely a plus over having to download books to a PC.
While I enjoy the wireless aspect of the Kindle I find myself returning to reading printed books again.
