Awful customer service, computer, & warranty November 24, 2009 Kami (Maryland) The computer kept shutting off by itself. Finally Gateway tells me I need to take it to a computer shop and have them get my data off at my expense. I take it to the shop they luckily get all of my data and also find the motherboard is faulty. They called Gateway and they were told that Gateway would cover the part only. I am responsible for the shipping to & from and the labor. We have had this computer a little under 3 months. What kind of customer service is this? For all of the money we paid for this piece of junk I should have to be putting more money out. I've email consumer affairs and also put a call into consumer affairs in South Dakota. I am not spending anymore money on this computer!!!
Great deal even with the heat problem November 18, 2009 C. Whang (Los Angeles, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I paid $469.00 for this computer in early October including shipping/tax. Dollar for dollar, there wasn't anything out there that came even close in terms of specs and performance.
I have very happy with my purchase. Enough so to post my comments here. I read tons of reviews on this product before buying. LOTS of people have complained both here and other sites. 90% of the problem seemed related to heat or lack of cooling (I include so-called "random" shutdowns in this category). I have avoided this problem. Thanks to the comments posted by other I probably never will. I installed 2 case fans to keep the computer cool (one 120mm and one 8mm) with a total out of pocket cost of less than $8.00. You can buy generic case fans on ebay for less than $4 each with shipping which is what I did or pay a little more through Amazon. Install was fairly easy for even a non-tech heavy guy such as myself. Weighing the cost/value of the computer even with its major but easily fixable flaw, I still think the LX6810 is an excellent value. If you don't want to open this baby up to add a cooling solution, pass on this computer because there is a darn good chance that you WILL have heating problems as dozens of posted here and other sites. I did not install the Gateway Bios update because it substantially increases noise with likely minimal reduction in heat. People have complained about how they cannot undo the BIOS update.
Consensus view seems to be that Gateway support sucks. I have no comment since I haven't dealt with customer service. However, while I haven't spoken with anyone over there, according Gateway's website, my Windows 7 upgrade hasn't even shipped yet and it is already 11/17. Slow ship is my reason for 4 stars instead of 5.
This is the worst PC Ever-- Shame On Gateway November 15, 2009 B. King (USA) I've had this computer for 3 months before it suddenly started shutting off randomly. It is cheap for all the specs and I see why. There is no cooling fan installed which makes absolutely no sense. This PC apparently has an overheating problem and Gateway released it knowing it's a bunch a crap. I am a multimedia artist and I loved this computer when I first bought it but now it just collects dust. If you dont want to utilize any of the specs and browse the internet without watching videos, This is the machine for you.
Nothing but problems October 14, 2009 Ryan M. Schroder (Minnesota, US) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this computer with the intention of using an HDMI cable to hook it up to my Sony LCD TV. Just getting the sound and picture to work was a hassle.
Then since getting that figured out and finding out that Vista 64 bit does not support of a lot of my peripherals and having to download new drivers.
The real agitation came when the computer software kept having problems. Every time I would put it into sleep mode and try to bring the computer back on it would freeze. Then I had to hold the power button to force a reset. Then when it came back on it could not start. I had to use the repair startup function after owning the computer for 2 days. This took hours just to get started.
Everything thing that I do with this computer has been a disappointment so far. I think its mostly Windows Vista to blame, but I am not positive its all their fault. I am elegible for the Windows 7 upgrade on October 22, so I am holding on to hope that will fix a lot of the bugs I have been having so far.
Other notes : its says 640GB hard drive, yet the max you can use is 597GB. I expected the standard few GB for the operating system and other essential functions, but didn't anticipate losing 43GB out of the gate.
Overheating - Poor Design October 14, 2009 SC (TX United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This PC has a lot of features for the price. I always had issues with it hanging on reboot and with the front RCA audio ports. After 5 months of good service, it has started shutting down randomly. It seems to be associated with an overheating condition due to poor design. I would NOT recommend this PC to anyone.
