As expected November 26, 2009 Luis Felipe Rodriguez (Bogota, Colombia) It's extra portable, nice look, good speed, no need for two USB ports. Exactly what I expected.
it's so cool that it can be advertised upside-down. November 26, 2009 zerotech (CA USA) Un-box, Plug and Play. Came formatted as FAT32 and contains a file for MacOS, so I guess it's Mac OS friendly, too.
Formatted to NTFS so to check for any time zero dead-bytes. SMART feature works for this drive - logging up to 24 SMART attributes, more than average that I've seen so far.
Start temp measured at 69F, full formatting worked the drive up to 105.8F (ambient temp 68F), meaning just barely warm to the touch.
The hardware inside: I looked up the intenal model number of this item, it says MK5055GSX. This is one of the recent HDD produced by Toshiba. Tom's HW rate it as the most bang-per-watt HDD. From the Toshiba website, it features free-fall sensor (FFS) to protect the drive. Sounds good to me.
USB cable provided is footlong with attached electrical filter (ferrite), and appears to be of good quality. I am glad that it's not a Y-cable, but if you need one, Toshiba website sells them at ~$7.50.
Do I like it? Yes, it's so cool that the photo of this product featured in most websites has the brand label upside down. :)
I am not a user of backup softwares, so no comment on the one provided within.
A great product!! November 24, 2009 K.W. (USA) I really like this product Toshiba 500 GB USB. It helps me to organize my huge files I used to save on my desktop. It works very well. I would strongly recommend this brand if you are looking for a portable hard drive for your files.
I like it November 23, 2009 Debi (USA) I really like how small it is, and that it doesn't need a separate power cord. The only think I don't like, is it tries to back up my hard drive every time I plug it in.... which could be a setting I haven't tried to find.
It's fast, quite and I haven't had it long, but so far so good.
Nice External Drive November 23, 2009 Richard K. Hull (AZ) Looks nice.
Easy plug and play.
Software, a little less than awesome. Alignment on screen is off center and leads to a lack of comfidence, but it is working pretty good for manual and automatic backups. Not very much space lost to software, or operating system.
