Amazon.com essential video
Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis wrote the script, but Bill Murray gets all the best lines and moments in this 1984 comedy directed by Ivan Reitman (Meatballs). The three comics, plus Ernie Hudson, play the New York City-based team that provides supernatural pest control, and Sigourney Weaver is the love interest possessed by an ancient demon. Reitman and company are full of original ideas about hobgoblins--who knew they could "slime" people with green plasma goo?--but hovering above the plot is Murray's patented ironic view of all the action. Still a lot of fun, and an obvious model for sci-fi comedies such as Men in Black. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars I Ain't 'Fraid a' No Ghosts!   November 1, 2009
James "Scotman" April (Bakersfield, CA)
One of the best ghost comedies of that decade, written by SNL funny man Dan Aykroyd and Harold Raymous, directed by Ivan Reitman.

Three parapsychology professors get kicked out of a university just when they have made a great discovery of capturing ectoplasmic goo and whatever goes with it. They decide to get a business going, called it Ghostbusters and prowl the streets of New York with a funky hearse with the license plate Ecto-1!

Bill Murray steals the show with his wit and dry humor. Sigourney Weaver flashes leg and blows her hair out -- "That's a different look."

An ancient Mesopotamian god takes over a skyscraper and with power wants to destroy New York and whatever else gets in her way. Her destroyer: The StayPuft Marshmallow Man! Murray quips, "Hey, he's just a sailor visiting New York!"

Sly commentary on government interference, bumbling cops and how the media can make anything popular just by putting their mark on it creating fake celebrity. Or, maybe it's just a fun movie.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A timeless sci-fi comedy classic!   October 31, 2009
John Q Public (Long Island, NY)
25 years after its original theater release, the original Ghostbusters is still a fun movie to watch, especially for those of us who are New Yorkers. Even though there is some grain, transfer quality is good for a 25-year-old film. Great trip down memory lane for those who enjoy the movie as kids back in 1984.

4 out of 5 stars Great Classic Movie   October 24, 2009
Melissa Oxendale (FL United States)
Just about everyone loves Ghostbusters. Having it Blu Ray just makes it all the better. It's a great movie, although it scared my daughter a little bit. I would recommend this to anyone who likes Ghostbusters, or if you haven't seen it yet.

4 out of 5 stars great movie, fine-looking transfer   October 19, 2009
Christopher Morgan (New York, NY, USA)
I'm not a high-def expert, but the rendition of the movie seemed good to me, I didn't notice any issues, allowing me to focus on the movie. It was great to catch up with this movie just like an old friend. It's still very funny and a bit spooky. Bill Murray is just great but the whole cast works together very well, even the lady hired to answer the phone at Ghostbusters HQ.

3 out of 5 stars Quality no better than DVD   October 12, 2009

I got this hoping that it would be in clear 1080p. It's clear but so it the graininess of the video. It doesn't seem that the master was in very good condition and not much was done to clean up the picture. Honestly you can get the same quality from an unscaled DVD which has mostly the same extras... So if you have the DVD don't bother getting the Blu-Ray unless they come out with a remastered version.
