5 out of 5 stars Emotional Rollercoaster including FUNNY!   October 16, 2009
Brenda (California)
A Seriously underrated movie. Take Mark Harmon's comedic talent (which most directors ignore) and his more serious talent, combine them and you will get a great movie. He starts off as a self loathing ex athlete and works his way thru the pain in some seriously funny scenes as well as the self examination he goes thru. Have worn out part of one DVD hitting reverse just to see the poison ivy scene....He and Harold Ramos are a scream coming out of the bar....singing. Jodie Foster is so beautiful in this movie and plays very well with the young Billy Wyatt character. Her great talent shows even in this early film. Love the fact it was filmed in the USA and using Mark Harmon's Minor League Baseball team the San Bernardino Spirits. This is for young and old alike. My children and I watch it with their grandparents every time a new season of Baseball starts.....

5 out of 5 stars NOSTALGIC MASTERPIECE!!!   September 22, 2009

I was shopping at a garge sale one day when i stumbled upon it. It didn't interest me that much to buy it, the only reason i did was because Jodie Foster looked like a beautiful Danish princess in the cover and it was 75 cents. It took about 2 weeks before i bought it to finally watch it, i was completley bored out of my mind, so i popped it in the DVD player and didn't really expect much. I WAS COMPLETLY BLOWN AWAY!! I'm so glad that i bought this amazing movie because it touches you in the most deepest ways. The acting is so sincere, the story is gorgeously crafted in a way to generate nostalgia of those better days, and to top it all off, the most gorgeous instrumental music you will ever hear laces it's way in and out of the movie beautifully! I will definatly be rewatching this film over and over.

They don't make movies like this anymore so
BUY THIS FILM!! it is truly wonderful

Im also heading to my cart to purchase the wonderful soundtrack!

I HIGHLY RECCOMEND THIS!

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgic drama   July 9, 2009

I've always been a big fan of Jodie Foster. It is only now that I'm able to see most of her works before her "Silence of the Lambs" film and I must say that she is charming even in her early movie performances.

Stealing Home is one of her movies where one gets to enjoy her child-like performance and fall in love with the nostalgic feel of the whole movie theme. After watching this movie, I started thinking about my childhood, teenage and post-university life and start to wonder where could all the people who made my past very meaningful and interesting be now. It's not a tear-jerking movie but it makes you feel human. It creeps into your heart because you know you've been there before -- falling in love when you were young.

5 out of 5 stars Waxing nostalgic   January 26, 2009

I first saw this film in the movie theatre and liked it a lot. The other day, I saw it on the shelf @ the pharmacy and was feeling nostalgic, so I picked it up. This is a PERFECT movie for anyone who happens to be in a nostalgic mood!

The plot centers around a burned-out baseball player (Mark Harmon) who is tasked with finding the final place of burial for an old friend's ashes. The old friend is Katie (Jodie Foster), who was his babysitter as he grew up during the 1960s. Katie committed suicide, which is a bit of a gender role-reversal; most movies which deal with suicides are stories of men ending their own lives. After all, men are FAR more prone to suicide than women are.

The story has plenty of flashbacks to his boyhood and teenage years - back when he spent time with Katie. She had a tremendous influence on his life, and Nietzsche would label her as a sort of un-restrained Dionysian character.

For myself, I could very much relate to the flashbacks where things seemed SO close to perfection, and yet any sort of sustained happiness was just out-of-reach. That is a motif that is more than relevant to my life.

The soundtrack was written by David Foster (St. Elmo's Fire) and is a classic 80s soundtrack. In fact, I have owned the soundtrack for several yrs on CD as I liked it so much.

The time of the movie is rather interesting in that Jodie Foster was making the transition from her childhood actress years of doing Disney-type movies to becoming an accomplished and serious actress. There are many actresses in Hollywood who are more glamorous than Foster, but few can match her in acting skills. I would very much like to meet her one day for a cup of coffee as it's obvious that she has a lot of depth to her personality.

This is a well-done movie, and the usually stoic Mark Harmon turns in perhaps his best performance. Harold Ramis (The Ghost Busters - The Complete Series (Filmation, Live Action) (1975)), Blair Brown (Altered States) also star, and a young Helen Hunt makes a cameo appearance.

Many people will call this movie sappy, and that's not altogether unfair. However, sometimes sappy movies can be good movies, and this is a good movie (in my mind). If you loathe films which ooze nostalgia, this one is likely not for you.

Ultimately, the title of the movie doubles as both a baseball maneuver as well as well as a symbol of how we must sometimes take chances in life in order to truly feel alive & vibrant. To paraphrase Rilke, the best life is one where one "lives dangerously."

4 out of 5 stars Underrated movie from the 80s hopefully not forgotten   December 29, 2008
Harold W. Lebo
This touching movie about a loser who finds his way back home through the death of a lost love and close friend brings him back from the brink of self destruction as he reflects on more happier times when he was young and inocent. The move itself is not overdone or depressing by any means of course you will lough and cry as this is the job of the movie but at the same time its great family viewing for everyone. most people who pan it seem to be comparing it to other 80s movies but this is not the case the movie itself is universal and in need of retelling and rethinking instead of cheap critism
