1 out of 5 stars Taking out the Garbage   November 12, 2009
Amaranth (Northern California)
"The Garbage Pail Kids Movie" is based on the immensely popular and offensive Cabbage Patch Kids parodies. In the '80s,the Garbage Pail Kids had the forbidden fruit appeal. Parents hated them--kids,of course, collected and enjoyed them. So,they decided to turn a trading card game INTO A MOVIE (this has taken a post-modern form with Yu-Gi-Oh! Grand Championship Season 5 Set ) The Kids will make you literally nauseated, they're that repellent. The lead is played by Mackenzie Astin, whose famous brother Sean, has starred in a far better fantasy series. "Garbage Pail Kids" will make you lose your popcorn. It's that bad. Avoid it for the kids. Avoid it for the future.

I loved this movie as a child, but not as an adult... Remake for 2010??

4 out of 5 stars Love it!   August 19, 2009

I collected the Garbage Pail Kids card as a 5/6yr old. I LOVE 80s movies (especially the ones using imagination and advaentures)!! If this sounds like you, buy it!! It has gross jokes and 80s hair. What more can you ask for??

5 out of 5 stars Must be seen to be believed   May 25, 2009
M. Ryan Fairbanks (Cleveland, Ohio)
This 1987 movie based on the popular trading card series, The Garbage Pail Kids, is required viewing for anyone who loves cornball, bottom shelf movies. It also doubles as probably one of the most twisted movies ever geared towards kids.

Dodger is a presumably orphaned 14 year old boy that spends his days working in Captain Mancini's antique shop. When he isn't at the shop, he's usually getting beaten up by a bully named Juice, mostly due to his infatuation with Juice's girlfriend Tangerine. One day Dodger's life changes when he knocks over a forbidden garbage pail at the shop, and who materializes from the green muck contained inside but infamous garbage pail kids. At first the garbage pail kids are a bit off-putting due to their disgusting behavior and toilet humor, but Dodger soon finds that they can prove to be useful when they make some interesting clothing that he can use to win over Tangerine, who is some sort of self proclaimed fashion designer. Ultimately, Dodger must choose between his true friendship with the garbage pail kids, and his superficial "relationship" with Tangerine who simply uses him to get the clothing that he gives her.

The Garbage Pail Kids Movie is awe-inspiring in its badness. Even without taking into consideration the horrible puppetry of the creepy looking garbage pail kids, or the 80's pop soundtrack, the storyline itself raises way too many questions to ignore. Where are Dodger's parents and why is he living in an antique shop with some flambouyant magician? Why do Juice and Tangerine, who appear to be about ten years older than Dodger, care so much about tormenting this kid? Was the bath scene really necessary? There are so many weird, uncomfortable vibes coming from this movie, and it's all unintentional.

The Garbage Pail Kids Movie simply must be seen to be believed. It's a great piece of 80's nostalgia that will also please fans of terrible movies by surpassing "so bad it's good" and becoming "so bad it's awesome!". Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars A nice guilty pleasure!   May 11, 2009
John Lindsey (Socorro, New Mexico USA.)

In the big city in a street-corner junk store owned by the mysterious magician Captain Mancini (Anthony Newley). Dodger (Mackenzie Astin) is a 12 year old orphan who lives with Mancini and after school he works there as his assistant as he falls in love with a lovely fashion designer named Tangerine (Katie Barberie) who is a sight for sore-eyes. However in the weird junk store there is a strange yet magical garbage pail that originally came from outer space years ago and Mancini has kept it secure so that no one could ever open it. But one day Tangerine's tough boyfriend named Juice (Ron MacLachen) with his gang beats up Dodger in the store they accident make the pail fall unleashing a gang of weird looking kids. Their names are Valerie Vomit, Greaser Greg, Ali Gator, Nat Nerd, Messie Tessie, Foul Phil, and Windy Winston as they are gross and disgusting alien-esque kids from some other world as they want to change the life of the poor sap and get him to like the girl that he desires.

Based on the popular 80's trading card phenomenon, this live-action attempt to bring the cards to life isn't really as bad as some people say. First off the cards back in 1985 made TOPPS Trading Cards a smash company as the leading makers of trading cards, back then the Cabbage Patch Kids were very popular yet the Topps company thought up an idea to make a trading card series that spoofs and satirizes those dolls in various ways including nausating and violent ways called "The Garbage Pail Kids". The cards were a runaway success with many children even though some parents and teachers weren't too happy about the cards's images but some knew boys loved disgusting things and spawned merchandise of all sorts, then in 1986 Atlantic Pictures got the rights for a feature length movie based on the cards. Written and directed by Rod Amateau who did some episodes of "The Dukes of Hazzard" didn't do too bad to make the franchise into a movie even though it was made on a low budget with some cheap laytex masks that hardly move on the midget actors that play the title heroes. Sure some stuff doesn't make sense and it feels like a series of tasteless vignettes but it does have a little bit of humor despite bad acting making this a guilty pleasure of mine.

The DVD is quite good on the picture and sound quality with one extra which is a trailer to the movie.
