5 out of 5 stars My Fair Lady the First   February 14, 2009
D. Murphy (Hudson, FL, USA)
The original My Fair Lady is my favorite. The comedy is great and you have to love it. This has to be included in your movie library and watch it along with My Fair Lady, not to compare, but to enjoy them both. You'll love them both.

5 out of 5 stars Fairer than "My Fair Lady" for me   September 9, 2008
D. Ward
I love this movie! It's the based on George Bernard Shaw's "Pygmalion" but isn't a fluffy musical like "My Fair Lady". I love Audrey Hepburn and musicals are fine, but this movie portrays the story much better. Wendy Hiller **is** Eliza Doolittle. The only thing I would change about the DVD is to have the sound remastered to be clearer. It's garbled sometimes and detracts from the viewing slightly but still this black and white is definitely a classic to have in your collection!

2 out of 5 stars Shaw's Pygmalion: Just good enough...   December 5, 2005

The classic story of the cockney flower girl Miss Eliza Doolittle played by the wonderful Wendy Hiller, who is transformed into a lady by phonetician Professor Henry Higgins - Leslie Howard - along with his colleague Colonel Pickering (Scott Sunderland). Shaw himself also scripted this movie adaptation.

Higgins, being a genius concerning phonetics, bets Colonel Pickering he could teach Miss Doolittle to speak "proper" English and to fool people into thinking that she is a duchess. As the story unfolds, the audience grows fond of the characters, especially Eliza, and one hopes that she will prevail in the end. However, that hope that she will prevail is entirely up to the audience - how they perceive the story and where the plot is going. One could say that Eliza received everything that she wanted out of her experience, others would disagree and be unsatisfied with Shaw's ending. I know that I did not find any closure as I finished the play.

"Pygmalion", though, is by far the best play for young English majors or for those English buffs. Shaw's work consists of many themes that can be explored; it is a work that critically looks at the society of London in the 1900s; and it takes a look at the class system. Shaw's use of wit and humour in the play also make it appealing for an audience.

I, personally, thought this play was quite dull to read. There are no exciting events that capture the reader's attention; the characters are, at times, predictable - Eliza being a prime example when she did not stay with Henry Higgins. As said beforehand, it is just good enough to study in a high school or university English course.

5 out of 5 stars Great Shavian comedy   November 3, 2005

George Bernard Shaw wrote the screenplay based on his own very successful stage play of 1913, and he even took an Academy Award for it - and deservedly so. It's a crackerjack production, his best on screen.

Leslie Howard plays the overbearing Professor Higgins and Wendy Hiller is the Cockney flower girl transformed into a "lady." Both are perfect, and the whole thing is a lot better than the musical it became (MY FAIR LADY). It sparkles throughout, and the Shavian jabs at middle class society ("Marriage - it's the proper thing, but it's not natural") are wonderful and are just icing on an already rich cake. Definitely worth a watch.

This review is for the AAE release (NOT the Criterion Collection). The film itself is great - I understand why some questioned the need or desirability of turning this into a musical (although I loved My Fair Lady also).
My beef with this particular DVD is that it is NOT indexed by chapters of any kind (you must watch the film from start to end or you lose your place) and the transfer is not so good. Since I haven't seen the Criterion version, I can't compare the image quality. I surely HOPE it's better.
