The Fox and the Hound marked the last collaboration between Disney's older artists, including three of the "Nine Old Men" (Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, and Woolie Reitherman), and the young animators who would make the record-breaking films of the '90s. Based on a book by Daniel P. Mannix, the film tells the story of a bloodhound puppy and a fox kit who begin as friends but are forced to become enemies. Tod and Copper barely establish their friendship before Copper begins his training as hunting dog. Unfortunately, neither character develops much of a personality, which makes it difficult to care about them. The screen comes alive near end of the film, when Tod and Copper have to join forces to fight off an enormous bear. It had been years since Disney produced a sequence with this kind of feral power--and years would pass before they surpassed it. The Fox and the Hound ranks as one of the studio's lesser efforts, but it suggests that better films were soon to follow. (Ages 5 and older) --Charles Solomon

The original dvd was lost in the mail. After communicating with the sender, he mailed another one. It all ended well.

5 out of 5 stars When You're the Best of Friends   August 30, 2009
D. COLLIER (Brownwood, TX United States)
I was a small child when THE FOX AND THE HOUND came out, but I had never watched it until this year. I can honestly say it's one of the best Disney cartoons I have ever watched. Of course, it's not one of the "old school" Disney films from when Walt Disney was still alive and could personally supervise the making of the film; but it does have that kind of "old school" Disney flavor to it. It has that old fashioned, trademark Disney feel where you know this one will not disappoint you.

All of the voice acting was superb - especially Corey Feldman as young Copper and the legendary Mickey Rooney as the adult Tod. (Considering myself to be a huge Mickey Rooney fan, THE FOX AND THE HOUND was one of many of his films I wanted to check out.)

I loved the "Best of Friends" theme that is played upon throughout the film. In the course of the early days of Tod and Copper's friendship, I was fairly certain that this movie could not have a happy ending. Yet it does, but I won't spoil it beyond that. In fact, THE FOX AND THE HOUND boasts one of those rare "Happily Ever After" endings that doesn't insult the intelligence of the child or the adult viewer.

4 out of 5 stars This item was a gift, so I don't know if the quality is good or bad.   August 10, 2009

This item was a gift, so I don't know if the quality is good or bad. I have yet to hear of any complaints, so I'm sure it's fine. Fast shipping. Thank you!

4 out of 5 stars A great movie to see once.   July 19, 2009
lighten_up_already2 (Kirkland, WA USA)
Well, somebody else just used "underrated" in a review title, so that sort of stole my thunder, but I'll say that I was pleasently surprised at how much I enjoyed watching this movie with my kids.

It's a basic story about what friendship is, and about choices in relationships. The ending sequence where the hound makes his choice is way scarier than what one would expect givin the cuteness of the cover art.

The problem is, I can't see myself ever wanting to see it again, unlike some of the real Disney classics like Sleeping Beauty.

So, save a buck and try seeing it before you pay for this special edition package.
