Amazon.com Winner of the World Audience Award at Sundance, Once starts out as a small-scale romance, like Before Sunrise, before arriving somewhere unexpected. An Irish busker (Glen Hansard, the Frames and The Commitments) meets a Czech flower seller (Markéta Irglová) while singing on the streets of Dublin. (In the credits, they're listed as Guy and Girl.) She likes what she hears and lets him know. Turns out she's a musician, too. They work on a few songs together and a friendship is forged. She lives with her widowed mother, who doesn't speak English. He lives with his widowed father, who owns a repair shop. Since he broke up with his girlfriend, the guy has been drifting, unable and unwilling to get his life in order. The girl encourages him to pursue a record deal, and the guy emerges from his funk. Then he makes a move on the girl, who rejects his advances. He's confused, but as he comes to find, there's a reason she's keeping her distance. Though Once is filled with appealing folk-pop by Hansard and Irglová (released on CD as The Swell Season), the movie isn't a traditional musical, but rather a more optimistic Brief Encounter. Filmmaker John Carney, Hansard's former bandmate, captures the real city--in all its affluence and poverty--rather than the picture postcard version. His beautifully shot film serves as a heartfelt ballad about all the underclass Guys and Girls swept aside amidst Ireland's economic miracle. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Just Perfect November 19, 2009 H. Cemil Yücer (Turkiye) This is one of the movie i have ever watched.I have also ordered its sountrack from Amazon.Just perfect.
Great Music November 18, 2009 Tricia The movie itself was great. The music in the movie was wonderful. So wonderful in fact, I bought the soundtrack on itunes.
A Muse Of One's Own November 15, 2009 Alfred Johnson (boston, ma) This is a quirky film. No question. It provides a very interesting twist in today's international multi-cultural society on the standard boy meets girl theme, and in Dublin no less. It also provides a quirky look at a subject that has always interested me, the trials and tribulations of trying to make ends meet while one is waiting to get one's big chance on the musical scene.
As for the boy (Glen Hansard) meets girl (Markita Irglova)part the two, a strong but sensitive Irish lad trying to go from busker (street singer) to the limelight and a displaced Czech gal (with child and mother in tow) trying to make it on her own in up and coming modern day "Irish Tiger" (at least up until the last couple of years) Dublin. The glue that puts them together? Well, she just happens to be something of a muse- and apparently classical trained at that. This one and one half hour film centers on that musical collaboration, the possible budding romance between the two, the baggage and drag of their previous lives and something of a surprise at the end. All the while they are making beautiful music together, really just the music folks (for the most part, although some of his singing is a little over the edge for my tastes). What no over-the top, no gratuitous violence to save a fair damsel in distress, no ironic detachment under the stress of modern living? No. I told you this was a quirky movie.
Loved this movie... but Amazon didn't deliver on time. October 1, 2009 Rafael Morales Wonderful movie. Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova are great as so
are the songs the perform. Loved the message abour pursuing one's
dreams no matter the obstacles.Very nice to watch enjoying good
company and a bottle of wine.
Still, I paid for two-day delivery and didn't get it on time.
I haven't receive a refund from Amazon, as promised on it's

Reimagining The Movie Musical September 14, 2009 L. Waters (Tucson Arizona) This movie comes as close as any I have seen to what it is like to make music with other musicians. The scene in the music store is a perfect example of those rare moments when two people sit down to play for the first time and "magic" happens. The scene toward the end of the film when the musicians leave the recording studio in the early morning hours captures the essence of recording music perfectly. Unlike some of the other reviewers I liked the fact that they relationship between the Guy and the Girl did not follow the typical Hollywood arc. Another refreshing departure from the standard movie musical was the relationship between the Guy and his father. The music is a matter of taste. I happened to like it and understand that street musicians cannot deal in subtleties; they have to grab the audience by the throat. This movie's other achievement it to reimagining the musical in a more realistic way, and on that level it is a triumph. The music is more organic and not artificially injected into the story. The fact that it was done on an incredibly low budget shows that the concept and story matter more than anything else in making a great film. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
