Amazon.com essential video There is only one word that comes close to accurately describing the enchanting Mary Poppins, and that term was coined by the movie itself: supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Even at 2 hours and 20 minutes, Disney's pioneering mixture of live action and animation (based on the books by P.L. Travers) still holds kids spellbound. Julie Andrews won an Oscar as the world's most magically idealized nanny ("practically perfect in every way," and complete with lighter-than-air umbrella), and Dick Van Dyke is her clownishly charming beau, Bert the chimney sweep. The songs are also terrific, ranging from bright and cheery ("A Spoonful of Sugar") to dark and cheery (the Oscar-winning "Chim Chim Cher-ee") to touchingly melancholy ("Feed the Birds"). Many consider Mary Poppins to be the crowning achievement of Walt Disney's career--and it was the only one of his features to be nominated for a best picture Academy Award until Beauty and the Beast in 1991. --Jim Emerson

Mary Poppins-a "pre-owned" DVD October 1, 2009 Nancy C. Thornburg (Markleeville, CA USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The DVD arrived timely, was bought at a very fair price, was in perfect condition, and has been enjoyed several times by grandchildren.
Classic September 29, 2009 R. E. Mayer If you have never seen this movie you live under a rock. I don't think a review is necessary. This is probably the one movie I quote the most. And since I enjoy birds and am currently living in Europe, you can imagine how often "Feed the Birds" comes to mind.
The years have not been kind to this one September 24, 2009 L. Foley (Cinnaminson, NJ) 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
Like all of us, our granddaughter loves movies. She's watched classics like the Wizard of Oz (a fave!), Black Beauty, and Dumbo countless times. While these films do show their age, they have nonetheless held up well over time and we've all viewed them over and over. I had never actually seen Mary Poppins until recently, and found this film to be quite disappointing--as did the grandchild, who was ready to hit the road before the kids even appeared. Everything about this movie is annoying, from the made-for-TV type effects, to the accents, to the very predictable story itself. It's neither fun, nor satisfying, and definitely not engaging for kids. Get the anniversary edition of Wizard of Oz instead--it's a far, far better film!
Classic movie still good September 16, 2009 Lawrence M. Swartout (Houston, TX US) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Mary Poppins... everyone should have seen this, or at least heard of it. Musical I enjoyed as a kid, and still enjoy as an adult. Must see.
Mary Poppins August 24, 2009 Bonnie B. Fabrizzio (San Antonio, Texas) This classic is one I have fond memories of since it was a special treat for us to go see a movie. 45 years ago, when it came out, it was perhaps the first time that actors were combined with animation and it was totally magical for us as kids. My family had never seen it before, so we all enjoyed watching it. The overall feeling you get from watching it is good and I like that. Glad I bought it.
