Amazon.com The Lucy Show does not have the iconic status of I Love Lucy, but it was a worthy and very popular successor (it was the fifth-rated show in its inaugural season). Based on a book, Life Without George, it was something of a groundbreaking series in that it centered on two single moms: one, Lucy, a widower, and the other, Vivian (Vivian Vance), a divorcee (the first such sitcom character). Vivian and her son, Sherman (Ralph Hart), share Lucy's suburban home in Danfield, New York, with her two children: teenage daughter Chris (Candy Moore) and wisecracking young son Jerry (Jimmy Garrett), who delivers zingers like a pint-sized Fred Mertz. Don’t look for Gale Gordon as banker Mr. Mooney. He doesn't arrive until season two. The great Charles Lane (one of Mr. Potter's minions in It's a Wonderful Life) appears this season as cranky Mr. Barnsdahl, who is in charge of Lucy's trust fund. Also appearing this season only is Dick Martin, of Rowan & Martin fame, as Lucy's neighbor, Harry. The Lucy Show is more contemporary than I Love Lucy. One episode references the dance craze, the Watusi. ""Lucy Visits the White House"" directly references the Kennedy clan and includes some mild political humor. When Lucy asks a diner counter man (Alan Reed, the unmistakable voice of Fred Flintstone) why he won't give her sugar cubes to rebuild a damaged model White House to present to the president, he replies ""I'm a Republican."" But The Lucy Show has aged gracefully thanks to the timeless physical comedy Lucy performs with Chaplin-esque grace (in ""Chris's New Year's Eve Party,"" she appears in a silent movie routine as the Little Tramp). Episodes may begin routinely, but they inevitably end up with Lucy and Viv stuck in a rapidly filling shower stall, wrestling with a circus elephant, or some other outrageous predicament. The Lucy Show is not as widely syndicated as I Love Lucy so these episodes have not been rerun to death. A treasure trove of archival extras includes an interview with Lucie Arnaz, who made her screen debut opposite her mother in the first-season episode ""Lucy Is a Soda Jerk,"" and another with Garrett, who tells some great and heartfelt stories about working with Lucy. Also fun are commercials that feature members of the cast in character, and clips from a 1962 CBS special, ""Opening Night,"" which previewed the network's fall lineup. With all this, what's not to love? --Donald Liebenson

The Lucy Show: The Official First Season
Finally on DVD! Thank you CBS! November 4, 2009 80's TV Fan 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This set is amazing! The story lines are just as funny as "I Love Lucy" and the transfers look great. My favorite part about this set is all the Bonus Features! The DVD producers really dug deep to come up with all the wonderful added value such as new interviews with Lucie Arnaz and child-star Jimmy Garrett. My favorite part is the "set-up" option which allows the viewer to view the episodes with original vintage sponsor openings, closing and cast commercials. I wish all classic TV on DVD had this feature!
The set has also been nominated for the 2009 TV on DVD Awards. I hope everyone will please take a moment to vote for The Lucy Show. This wonderful set clearly shows that the DVD producers and CBS Home Entertainment put a lot of hard work into making it something really special for the fans. As of yet, there has not been any word as to whether Season 2 of The Lucy Show will be released on DVD. However, if the set wins this award, perhaps it will give CBS even more incentive to release the rest of the series.

Simply fantastic November 2, 2009 G. Brown (Boston) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The Lucy Show certainly doesn't have the iconic status of I Love Lucy but Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance are as good as ever. They are the perfect foils for each other and masters at physical comedy. Actually this show focuses more them and gives us a much better view of their talent and chemistry together. Tell me anyone in their 50's that would get up on stilts the way Lucille Ball did, or get caught in the shower, etc. This is good fantastic humor and a must have for any Lucille Ball fan. Let's hope the remaining seasons get issued soon.
Great *EXTRAS*! This Is The Way DVD Sets Should Be! September 30, 2009 Alex Honda (Los Angeles, CA USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
THE LUCY SHOW FIRST SEASON DVD SET is great for nostalgia purposes. In it, Vivian Vance re-teams with Lucille Ball (Ethel & Lucy from I Love Lucy - The Complete First Season one of the greatest comic couples in television history, IMO) this time sharing a house together as single mothers. They get into all kinds of trouble and if many of the jokes/stunts seem familiar it's because the same writing team wrote many episodes on this show.
Be on the look out for "I Love Lucy" actors/actresses who make appearances throughout "The Lucy Show."
Anyway, I was too young to watch this show when it aired, but I remember seeing re-runs every now and then, so I decided to buy the DVD set.
This is basically Lucy & Ethel in the 60s so if you're a fan of "I Love Lucy" then you'll probably like this series.
The DVD extras are what make this DVD set priceless:
======= EXTRAS =======
***Featurette*** "Let's Talk To Lucie"--19:42-minutes
Interview with Lucie Arnaz, Lucille Ball's daughter, about the show and her cameo appearances as a young child.
***Vintage Promo*** "7 Wonderful Nights"--3:22-minutes
A clip from CBS's lineup that features Lucille Ball introducing "The Lucy Show" sneak peek.
***Vintage Promo*** "CBS Promo"--01:02-minutes
Another vintage promo.
***Vintage Commercial and Sponsor Spots***
These are really great because you have the option of playing them while watching the episodes, so you get a feel of what is what like when "The Lucy Show" aired, or you can watch them by themselves. The commercials are all very different then today's commercials and they all have something to do with the show i.e. Lucy & Vivian stick figures washing their faces with "LUX Soap" at the beginning of the episode. Also have the option to watch with the vintage closings.
I would say that this set is a must for Lucy and Vivian fans, and for anyone who enjoys watching vintage television shows. But other than that I think some might find the gags too similar to the ones on "I Love Lucy" and might not enjoy the show.
GREAT PRODUCT, BUT.................. September 27, 2009 DEAN (PALM SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA) 3 out of 9 found this review helpful
This is one time where something is advertised as totally restored and it really is!! The quality is pristine and the extras (original commercials, goofs, production notes, etc.) are great.
Unfortunately watching this show after so many years does prove that memory is selective. Of the 30 episodes only 5 or so are really good. The rest are fair with one or two outright poor. Somehow this show is written as totally Lucy-centric rather than containing an ensemble cast with a main star -- as in I Love Lucy. In many episodes it seems that a "zany Lucy scene" was thought up first and then a flimsy plot was written around it to provide some weak motivation for the "zany" scene. With the exclusion of Vivian Vance (who was excellent in this - when allowed to shine) the rest of the cast is wasted and inexplicably not integrated into many of the plots of the show. Of course this season is infintely superior to the truly awful post-Vivian Vance years!!
All in all if you are a Lucy fan I would recommend the purchase of this - it still provides a great insight into the past and at times can be very enjoyable.
