Product Description The Scarlet Pimpernel-black and white- Is he here? Is he there? Those Frenchies seek him everywhere! Or so starts the poem created by the Scarlet Pimpernel himself. It is after the French revolution, and this mysterious Englishman disguises himself and sneeks into France to save innocent noblemen and women from the guillotine. Robespierre, the mad leader of France, enlists his henchman Chauvelin to capture that damned elusive Pimpernel! Return of The Scarlet Pimpernel-black and white- This direct sequel takes up where the last film ended. France is still at the mercy of the guillotine-happy Robespierre, who is becoming increasingly more paranoid. He seeks to rid himself of the traders within his own circle, and to get the Scarlet Pimpernel. Once again, he uses Chauvelin to get the unknown Englishman who liberates Robespierre's soon-to-be beheaded enemies. Chauvelin devises a clever trap to catch the Pimpernel's wife. Can The Scarlet Pimpernel rescue her before it's too late??

I've heard about the Scarlet Pimpernel years ago as it is a classic, but this DVD is the first time I ever saw it and its sequel. Leslie Howard, one of the stars of -Gone With the Wind- and Pygmalion, is wonderful as the English Superhero. He gives the character a sneeky humor and charm that sets the character alive. Barry K. Barnes also gives a good performance in the often overlooked sequel, The Return of the Scarlet Pimpernel- which manages to tie up the unresolved elements of the first movie. Look for a young James Mason in it. All in all, good clean entertainment about heroism in post revolution France. Also, there is a nice collection of cartoons and movie trailers on this DVD.
